hereagain
I'm trying to find a quick and easy way of making measurements in Max for aligning objects. I really like the ease of the Tape Measure tool in Sketchup for laying out construction lines which are easily identified and not confused for actual line work in the drawing. Does anyone work like this in Max or is there a different approach to placing objects at particular locations? Thanks.
martin walker
theres a tape measure tool in max, aswell as some other nifty measuring tools. Or you can switch on Grid Snap and work like that.
notamondayfan
i woudlnt exactly use the tap measure for positioning objects. the snap tools are really useful for that, especially when you contraint to one axis only.
Hazdaz
MAX is REALLY not good at measuring or having any kind of accuracy. And it's snap tools leave much to be desired. Shame too, because AutoCAD has such good snapping and measuring tools - I just wish AutoDesk would copy them over to MAX.
Tommy L
I would disagree. I used to think the snaps were rubbish, but once you start using them in conjunction with the constraints and (the tick-box it took me 6 years to discover) 'start new object' they become very logical. And the quickest measure tool is in 'measure distance' in the tools(?) dropdown.
hereagain
Tommy, What exactly are the constraints and 'start new object' items you are referring to? I've seen these mentioned before, just not familiar enough with Max to know for certain. Thanks for the input.

Not trying to argue with you - cuz if you are happy, that is great, but if you come from any type of CAD package that has countless ways to measure and snap to object, MAX's methods do indeed suck. Koper
I think max can improve this feature allot, maybe put in something that you can select two or more points and it then gives a visible reading of the measurements that also have a render option so one can actually use it in a render. Also giving it a style option dialog box so one can create one's own style, something such as the text object creator.
Matt McDonald
I feel like starting with Max 7 the snaps became pretty good. I rarely use the tape measure tool for anything other than to determine an angle. I usually make a lot of rectangles for my measurements.
