Learning Editions

A coupel of days ago I was discussing REVIT with a friend of mine who works in the Architectural Vizualisation field. The only program he uses is MAYA. He explained that when he started out, the only available program, free of use to learn to work on was MAYA (student learning edition). I think that there are many MAYA users out there with the same experience. Why haven't other companies like AUTODESK adopted the same method for their programs like REVIT. It's impossible to learn a new program with their 30 day trial CD's. Anybody out there have an opinion about this?

The student/faculty versions are extremely reasonable in price but you can't charge for any work produced using the educational version regardless of who bought the software. It is for educational use only. I am not sure how they handle educational licenses for those outside of North America.

In my experience when you buy student software, they ask for ID. Sometimes they also ask for proof that you're currently registered. Journeyed will ask you to email scanned copies or fax them.

What Antonio is referring to is the Alias "Personal Learning Edition" software, which is great - you don't have to be a student, you can use it as long as you want, and it has all the features, but regular versions won't open PLE files (and PLE won't export portable files) and PLE only does low-res renders. You can download these from the web site and they come on the CDs in the back of Autodesk/Alias brand books They have them for Maya and Studio, I don't know if there are any others.
