First Quarter 2007

The December NL news letter says that the new 1.2 update for Maxwell will come out in the first quarter of 2007. That will be about 9 months since the release of V1.1 and a full year since V1.0 was released, what do you guy's think about how long it's taking them to come out with updates? I personally think it's pretty pathetic that it's taking this long to fix what was supposed to be a full release. What that says to me is NL isn't taking Maxwell's development seriously; I'd be surprised if they had more than 2 or 3 people working on it full time. We found out after the release of the Max plugin that they only spent a month working on it and they were supposed to have a full time Max plugin developer working on it for much longer than that. At this pace NL could be working on Maxwell V1.X for 2 or 3 more years before they finally get all the bugs worked out and features implemented. I simply don't understand these guys’s; it's like there actively trying to undermine them selves and their company.

That is pretty odd. The vast majority of 3d software I know tends to release a new version a year, at the least a .5. Even though some of these releases could be argued not to be true upgrades, they usually make it up the next time around. But to only move up by .2 in a full year is pretty pathetic to say the least. To make things worse, 1.2 hasn't came out yet, so there's no telling if it will even be out when they say it will. If they are saying the first quarter, you would be wise in expecting it to come out no earlier then the middle of year.

The best sentence in the December news letter was the admission to a finished Linux 1.2 version. But, and it's a big BUT, it will not be released until the other versions are ready. NL is priceless.

I guarantee the bugs in 1.2 are going to be tremendous. That's why I suspect they want all versions out at once. You can just imagine the extra heat they would get if all of us Linux users start reporting the problems in 1.2 before the Windows and Mac versions are out.

I understand NL desire to support different OS and 3D applications but they really got in over their head, I think at one time they had more than 20 different applications scheduled for a plugin. They have obviously scaled that back but even now with the much smaller number they don't have enough man power to get the job done. Again for me it goes back to the question are these guys as committed to making Maxwell a success as they say they are. All of their actions to this point say that no they aren't, it appears like a half hearted attempt on their part with little or no follow through.
