I'm back, learning and relearning

Hello everyone, it's been about 6 months to a year since I've worked in 3D and since I've posted here. (It's a long story) anyways I'm back with a new comp, max 5 and testing the vray demo. This is what I've been working on the last few days, please post any comments you may have (remember I've been away from 3D for awhile) I still have alot of modeling and texturing to do. Also to nuno or nisus (can't remember which one) I will bevel the edges at the end, ok? :p

It's great, but I think you should play with the colors a lil bit. That funny TV rack, do you design it yourself? another question is, that Forum Moderator really you? if it does, then i must be miss something here :???: .

héhé ivan,

 

strange you haven't noticed lanni before, as his signature really attracts a lot of attention! But he has been of for a while...

 

lanni: bevels? that must be me. A tip: don't do things at the end! during deadlines this means you won't do it, so you screw quality within the first minutes allready. You'll really save time if you do so on the forehand and gain a lot of quality. But that's just all imho of course... ;)

hey nisus, it's been awhile. I'm not too concerned with beveling for this project cause i'm just using it to learn about max 5, vray, and seeing how fast my new comp is. how does it look so far for my first max5/vray scene? To fix those weird shadows (like under the window, second pic) do I up my lighting samples or do I up my aa to fix that? I'll post some updates maybe later on today.

 

P.S. nisus, I'm no longer in the industry so no deadlines.

hi lanni,

its good to see u again... ;)

about the edges, definetely its not me...hehe.

in my opinion when u work with gi/rad u must model with the minimum number of faces that is possible. i always try to soften the edges by trying many types of antialiasing and/or using some tools in photoshop to achieve this result (burn tool or dodge tool).

here is an example what i am talking about:

about your image, honestly i dont know vray, but i like what you are starting to do...the distribution of light seems well done with some artifacts here and there, but i am sure you will correct these flaws with a few more wips. ;)

ok, here are some updates. I put the rest of the walls in, fit the floor to the room and upped the secondary bounces abit. Any ideas for some good camera angles? I suck at that especially in tight spaces. It's a small room, 12'x12' and then that cut out section makes it tight.

I like the first model better, giving me 'open' feeling a lot. Maybe you could split the wall so when you render top view it's all there and when inside just hide em like the first one. Hey, it's seem you have fix the shadow and your image pump up better GI. How fast it is in your new comp?

well the room shouldn't have an "open" feeling too much cause it's small 12'x12'x8' and I really really don't want to split it up or hide stuff when rendering and it also messes with reflections, light bounces and such. They weren't hiden in the first one, just weren't modeled yet. Yeah I bumbed it up to like 4 passes, did the trick. My new comp is pretty fast, these 800x600's took under a minute, most under 30s.

hey Cesar R, the only light in the scene is he enviroment.

 

my settings:

 

AA: default adaptive subdivision

GI: first 1.0

second .95

high preset irradiance map

Enviroment: 1.18

255,255,249

reflect/refract: 1.0 with hdr map

Very nice reflections on the front panel of the desk.

Can you tell us how many lights ans what kind of settings are you using?

 

This is a test of mine, I am also looking to learn/buy V-ray but I am having a hard time with interios. for some reason the "secondary bounce" mutipler only goes to 1.0 on my machine but i've read post were people are using numbers such as 1.2 or even 2.0 - the "difuse bounce" multipler does go higher than 1.0 though.

 

can you guys take a look at the following imge and tell me if the setting seem correct?

 

Lanni do you have a room on your room? or it is open to the sky light sys?.

 

My model is completely close expect for the door opening and the sky light cutout i've made. somehow I can get the light to shine through the skylight cutouts

Cesar R:, I don't quite get what your question is with your rendering and settings. I don't have a ceiling on my model. My setting are pretty far off from yours though; for one my scene only has enviroment lighting,no area light. Your image sampler should be on adaptive subdivision and my enviroment setting is at 1.18, your depth of secondary bounces is abit high i think. and i use the irradiance map presets at usually medium or high.

 

ok, now I have a question for all the other vray users. I think my light is descent but not truly happy with it, I did some research looking for how people set up interior scenes and found that it varies. So, I want to hear everyones' way of doing interiors with vray and come up with the best options.

 

Maybe once we find the best way(s) someone can come up with a tutorial.
