Bonuses

I worked on place where they choose to do a fancy dinner instead of holiday bonuses. :( actually to be fair we did get bonuses throughout the year. If it is an annual benifit to handout bonuses I think it is fair to ask. Ask a coworker when they got theirs last year.

i think it depends on the company..... we receive fiscal end of year bonuses, which puts the bonus about the second week October. our bonus is based on how profitable our company was for that fiscal year.

I think most companies are like this - if there is no money than there won't be bonuses. And, I wouldn't ask - it is by definition a bonus, and not profit sharing (which is scheduled), or salary (which is a bilateral agreement). And they may have been quite profitable - but in a short term cash flow crunch which will compromise bonuses.

Better to ask someone that has worked there a while (not the boss) what the typical procedure is and when their fiscal year ends.

I'm sorry, I'm not following. What's a bonus?

I guess you wont know that coz your probably the boss.hehehe.I looked on your site, nice one.:D

It depends on the contract. Here in this company, were being given 1 month paid leave with round trip ticket to my country every year.

I dont know about you,but if your colleages are receiving it,so should you.ask for it,there's nothing wrong about it.the best way is to send them an e-mail if your too shy to talk to them personally.:)

Since I've never gotten one in my life, when do you usually get them? Before or after the new year? I know that my company gives them but don't want to be a pest and come right out and ask but it's getting down to the wire here folks.

I think you should march into your boss's office and demand your bonus right now! In fact, for making you wait, you should demand a double bonus!

Let me know how that works out for you.

We get the fancy Christmas party instead of a bonus too. Actually last year we did get a whole $20 on an AMEX gift card. Most people felt like it was pretty cheesy...kind of like living someone a 25 cent tip at a restaurant...why bother.

I did end up asking a co-worker yesterday. He skirted around the issue like a champ - "sometime we get them before the holiday, sometimes after, sometimes not at all..." so I guess I'll have to resort to acting like a an adult. It won't be easy but I'll try.

Good call - having been a boss in the past I can't tell you how annoying it is to have people expect bonuses just because you've been generous in the past.

If they see you work hard and contribute to the bottom line, they'll value you more and share if they are smart. If they see you feeling entitled to money with no idea as to what they're up against (money owed to them, money they owe), etc...they'll just get pissed off. Believe me.

...oh ya. never expect a bonus. we have been lucky and received one the past couple of years because business has been good. however, i have went several years without a bonus, and i was fine with that. i do not expect one, that is why it is nice when the company hands one out.

...but more to the point. ...did the company tell you they were handing out bonuses? ...or are you assuming that you are?

...also, typically you have to have a min. of 6 months to a year with the company before they will consider you eligible for a bonus if they decide that they were profitable enough to give bonuses that year.

It just depends on where you work. At my first employer, we never got any Christmas Parties, and we got a $10 gift certificate to the bar down stairs. I've been working at my current employer for over 6 years now, and we have a very nice Christmas party every year at a really nice place. We have a live band, Fillet Mignon, and an open bar. This year I won a $200 certificate to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, so they're pretty generous with the Christmas Parties. Also we get Christmas Bonuses a week before the party. They told us our bonuses were down 2/3 since it was a slow year, but I ended up getting a little over 2 weeks salary. We always get something here, we just never expect the same amount every year. I'm just thankful that I get anything.

One of my clients had a project manager (sadly she has left that company) who would organize a dinner party like that to wrap up a big project, especially a competition, and invite the whole team. She always made sure the renderer felt like part of the team (listening to my ideas, being honest about the situation and project budgets, having me at strategy meetings) and would therefore invite me to the project-wrap party.

That's like getting a bonus.

We used to do them around Christmas, but we implemented earlier this year a quarterly system that uses a mixture of objective and subjective criteria. The bonus pool is then split accordingly.

The Christmas bonus is on the lower end and comes in mid-December - but that is because there will be a bonus distributed in January for the last quarter of 2006.

Bonuses are tough because as an employer, I want to always be able to give really good ones (way better than I ever got), but it is impacted by cash flow each quarter. It is natural for people to expect them when they are institutionalized.

I'm amazed by how many employers don't give them ever......I had plenty of those in the past - architectural firms are really bad about it in my personal experience.

Its still good that your having Christmas break,(i think most of you are having it...)coz here in gulf,it is rarely celebrated ,unless your boss is a Catholic,or if he's considerate enough to understand that we celebrate it.But in terms of bonuses, were having a yearly 1 month paid leave and a round trip ticket to our homeland.that is in the labor code for expats(but still most of the companies wont give it unless you specifically point it out when interviewed.then after your contract ends, mostly its two years, you'll be having your indemnity.that is like a seperation pay,,commonly one month of every year service.and since im working for a contractor, and im a pioneer, were having performance bonus, that would be given this january.yahoo...what do you think should i buy?:D
