Vray Procedural Map tutorials/materials

Hey everyone,

I am rendering an outside shot of a highrise building which is wrapped in stone, most closely resembling a very rough granite. I have several materials which look great up close, but the 3/4 shot of the building really reveals the tiling. I would love some help on:

1. Modifying a bitmap material to be used on a large flat surface (either through Photoshop or in Max).

2. If this is more work than its worth, are procedural maps for this kind of material more appropriate? And if so, are there any good tutorials for them? I found several, but they are a bit dated and most required 3rd party plugins.

Thanks

My advie would be to experiment with 'mix' maps using a 'tile' map in the mix channel. then use bitmaps (stone etc) and noise maps in the two channels in the mix. you can put a 'mix' map in the image channel and so on. Using the tile in the mix with a high figure (from 1 to 20) in the variance (greyscale value of each tile in the tile-map) prevents repetition in the overall material.

I know that sounds like gobbldygook, Ill post some examples, maybe a tutorial if i have time, a bit later.

I had a large office tower that also had a lot of granite tile cladding. This method could be used along with tom's suggestions. First create a "cross" bitmap that will only be used to show the tile lines or reveals of the desired thickness. Then make a mix material with 1 channel having a "speckle" map in one of the mix chanels. You can then adjust the 2 colors to match what you need for the granite materials. Then in the othe mix channel, mix in a "splat" map. Like the speckle map, you can adjust the 2 colors in the splat map that will add the natural globby variation stains that granite so often has.
