crz_06
Any tips on how to create a 3d structure simular to the left white wall in this picture > http://www.evermotion.org/comm/ai02/008.jpg So with the smooth rounded corners at the edges. I suppose for this model a displacement map was used, but this technique will not work for me, as I work with a reference 3d wireframe model. (just lines , no mesh). The structure very much resembles this > http://www.etteloc.ie/products/BEEF%20TRIPE%20HONEYCOMB.jpg and upclose > http://www.agr.state.il.us/programs/bees/images/bee_with_honeycomb.jpg Any tips/ideas on how to create such a structure with modifiers only? (gonna make a maxscript, so I prefer a none mesh editing approach) . Notice the smooth corners at the edges thx
DavidR
Check out the "compound shape" installments at Ted Boardman's site: http://www.tbmax.net/ This could work well for you, then apply a turbosmooth or meshsmooth on top if you want it more like your first image -the white 'cheese' walls If you have any problems, I'll give it a shot for you. I don't understand your reason for not using displacement.
chiquito
CRZ 06: I have done once something kinda like japanese architect toyo ito´s stuff, what I did (in max) was: 1- draw a spline, unclick the create new shape and carry on drawing and attaching shapes to your swiss cheese structure. 2-After that, extrude it, place 4 segments. 3-convert to edit poly, 4-apply turbosmooth or meshsmooth, click on edit stack and revert to edit poly/vertex with show end result on 5-adjust vertices to the smooth corner you are looking for. Voilá, you have ypur cheese or bee panel ready. Hope it helps, it did for me. Good luck, Chiquito
Keylitho
Well it is not very thick then mabey your could use a opacity map but if you need it modeled and really smoth looking I would just draw a box to the size you want and make sure there are plenty of segments, convert to poly then mess up all of the vertexe's so they look not so square then select a poly on one side then same on the oposing side and bridge them, and mabey even throw a tensilate modeifier in there somewhere... (edit:) Here is a quick exsample i did in like 5 min.... you would ofcourse take a little more time and make a little more random shapes.. ~Erik
batteryoperatedlettuce
I know a super duper fast way to do this. In fact I'm almost sure that it's the same way that the model in the picture was made. I'll post you a picture later and If I'm feeling really happy I'll make you a point and click script to make it automatically from a rectangle. edit - sorry about the wait. I'm burning out over here trying to finish drawing some plans. Haven't had time yet.......
Sawyer
Check out POLY BOOST. It does great 3d hatch like patterns that would be a cool easy way to do the random aspect of the shapes. I cannot recommend POLYBOOST enough. http://www.polyboost.com/ I only use a fraction of it but it saves sooo much time!
