I use Revit almost exclusively, but have tried out many programs SoftPlan (gasp!) ADT (too hard for me) yes I tried Rhino Antisthenes still quite interesting AutoCAD of course Max but I'm getting into Hammer a little because I like the physics engine of HL2 dislplaying what I designed. Purely for fun at the moment.
Antisthenes
haha but did you try v4? welcome m8! to make adt less hard just get together a set of doors windows and wall types load object enabler on top of regular acad and just use those pieces/objects. when you say you will become a designer from a res. designer do you mean because the bubble busting on the home market? or are you saying you are not going to build any more? I did similar I went from custom ecological residential design build to doing large facilities now(LEED) stuff.
Brian Cassil
Sounds like you are using CG for design/cad mostly. You'll find people here are render gurus for the most part. Don't let that dissuade you from posting though. There probably could (maybe should) be a stronger base for CAD folks on the forums.

ChooChoo
Ah yes, I use Revit and can import all my materials into Max/Viz. From there I'm a noob. I can get it looking decent, just not professional. Always interested in educating myself. Ant, I tried to get v4, but can't because I never had v3. so 3 is what I can base it on, but like I said, it does look quite interesting. Biggest complaints I have about Revit is the modeling tools and ability of the program to manage the model. It seems very slow for what the model is. But it fits best to what I'm doing.
