Aaron2004
Hey all, I've spent the last year doing exteriors that interiors are totally throwing me for a loop! I have attached 2 pictures. The large one is the one I'm trying to imitate. The smaller one is mine. I'm using VRAY free. I have tried a few lighting setups. It looks like the picture I'm trying to imitate is being lit by basically the sun in the windows and a light in the kitchen, the hall and the bath. I suppose that the artist used VRAY sun and VRAY lights. However, I don't have that luxery. Has anybody ever attempted anything to this quality with out VRAY? Thanks! Ricardo Eloy
Well, Aaron, the original has nothing fancy in lighting. The guy probably used a direct light as the sun and lit every room with spots and MAYBE some area lights (VRay). You can do just the same with VRay Free, you just need to light it the way you would do a regular interior.
Aaron2004
Well, the first thing I tried was lighting with just a directional light (sun), but it doesn't bounce around the room, it just creates a rectangle of light on the floor. The way that this guy did it looks like the room is actually being lit through the windows. When you say 'Spot' lighting...do you mean an actual spot light, or a point light? Are you saying put another spot light right in the windows pointing in? MMmm..even if you aren't saying that, I might try it. Thanks for the help...I REALLY appreciate it. William Alexander
Use a light with soft/area shadows and maybe a couple of fill lights coming from an opposite direction to catch any over dark areas. Fill lights with low brightness and slightly vairied colorations
Aaron2004
OK...so I found some time for some progress (unfortunately, I don't have much time to work on this). I removed the ceiling (it was invisible to camera), took away the directional light that acted as the sun and upped my GI environment. I experimented with lighting in each room...so some rooms look worse than others. The main problem/worry that I have is the very bright spot in the living room by the front door. The carpet has no specularity to it...and there is no light above it, which means the concentration of light is coming from the GI environment. Does this make sense? I thought that the GI environment was even over the whole scene. Thanks! Aaron
