Devin Johnston
There are a lot of DVD to ipod conversion programs on the web, does anyone here know of a good one that isn't to expensive or even free?
AJLynn
Do you mean commercial DVDs, as in the legal gray area? (As far as I can tell, given the weirdness of copyright law since DMCA, it's not legal to create software for this, but using it is still covered under fair use assuming it's your DVD. Therefore I won't post a link here to anything that circumvents copy protection, but I'll send you one privately.) Are you looking for something easy, one-click style? I've seen things for that for Mac but not PC. For PC, my suggestion would be that you use one of the complicated-looking-but-not-so-bad-when-you-try-it methods of going from DVD to AVI, but replace the steps where you would actually encode the AVI with encoding using Quicktime Pro ($30 and well worth it). I've been thinking about it myself, so I think when I get some time I'll figure it out and write it down. Also, if you Google convert video to ipod there will be a ton of hits. wilky9
CloneDVDMobile and AnyDVD is my lethal combination. Not free, but easy to use and fast with fantastic results.
AJLynn
That looks better than my idea, which would have involved several pieces of software and more muxing than most people are comfortable with.
Jeff Mottle
Funny you shoudl post this. I just purchased PQ DVD software for this very purpose. I wanted to be able to watch my DVDs on my ipod while I was traveling for 3 weeks. I downloaded about 15 different apps and liked this one the best. http://www.pqdvd.com/ I suppose it's a grey area, but I purchased the DVD, I own it and I don't plan on distributing it, so whatever. It did not seem to have any issues with any of my DVDs that say they have copy protection. I copied both Saving Private Ryan (in DTS) and one of the latest James Bond DVDs from the Ultimate collection I got for xmas and neither presented any issues.
