electroninc design I

this is an intro class into electronic design. the class is all autocad based and we have just finished the 2d segment of the class and now it's time to work on our final project in 3d.

I already know how to do it pretty good, and have gone back and done previous assignments in 3d.

what I'm getting at is I am looking for a good idea for my final project. I wanted to do something fairly large scale. like an office building/ something comercial. he said we can also do something for a competion, as long as it was related to 3d autocad. I have 6 weeks to do it, and I think I can tackle something larger than a house I just did in 2.5 hours.

do you guys have any idea of buildings I could use for my project? it doesnt have to be my own work, but I want it to be, just lookign for maybe ideas to work off of, and I am stumped.

any thoughts are welcome.

thanks

I forgot to add that this will not be textured, or surfaced. strictly the structure and no rendering, so relatively simple stuff.

was thinking skyscraper? or is that too ambitious? I dont think that would be that hard really...

Hi joes,

Skyscrapers are but a piece of bread, make one slice (=floor) and array to infinity...

I would recommend a design that with special computer issues so you can learn it's full force.

Some examples:

- repetition (model one detail and copy)

- modulation (different solutions for the same modul)

- curved panelling (starting from torus, circle etc.)

I was thinking about the Sainsbury complex by Fosters. Fairly simple in details, modulated, large... and you'll get different techniques to learn: working in front views (panelling), in plan view (organisation / plan), lofting (the structure), technical features, glass facade...

Sounds nice, learnful, not to difficult but diverse and manageable in your time shedule ,;)

thank you both for your replies. I am looking into both of them right now, as well as other similar types of buildings.

Since my teacher is saying more of "do anything" I was wonderng if I should try and track down a project outline, similar to what I do in other studios, and just make my own project rather than just simply doing a building.

I think if I approach him with a project I have found it will make him happy that I am going above and beyond.

above all else I am trying to make a very strong portfolio piece too, so I guess I need to get at it.

can you fellas direct me to some place I could find like a competition or class outline I could base my project off?

thanks again

joe

Is this primarily a design exercise or a modelling exercise?

If it is primarily a modelling exercise then modelling some one-elses design (built or not) may be of advantage to you, in that you are forced to reproduce geometry from a known reference. whereas if you model your own design, you have the ability to rationalise (cheat) details of the design if you find them tricky to model rather than forcing yourself to solve the problem.

If it primarily a design exercise then maybe check out these competitions as a basis for your own design;

well I think it is aimed at being more of a modeling exercise. he has had people do design stuff though. I was just wanting to go above and beyond becuase I have a little knowledge with auotcad, and this could look real good in the portfolio if done right.
