Aaron2004
Hello all, By the time I get done tweaking my VRAY Sun and VRAY physical camera, the sky in the background is navy blue. Is there any benefit to using the sky that comes with VRAY sun? For that matter...does anybody even use vray sun or do you find a direct light more fit? By the way..I'm talking exterior renderings. Thanks! Aaron
Sawyer
If I am using a vray camera I use a vray sun. I often use the sky because it is linked with the sun, but there have been times when I wanted more control over the fill light and I used vray colors in a gradient map. If the scene is too contrasty I may not use the sun/camera combination. But for the most part I use them.
BrianKitts
A proper colored vraySky requires gamma correction (LWF) otherwise it will be to dark if you don't manually brighten it. If you aren't familiar with these terms, start using the search tool here on the forums, and get ready to read, you are about to embark on a new journey BTW... in addition to gcarchitect there's also alot on the subject on vray forum's as well... http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15303
Aaron2004
Thank you for those links and terms...I spent a lot of last night watching a video tutorial for this very question. I fixed the sky problem by putting it under an 'output' material. I also set my Gamma to 2.2 However, I am encountering a problem with setting my gamma at 2.2. It seems that this really messes with my materials...not in my material editor, but in the file loader window of the material editor (see attachement). I try to change the gamma settings in here, but it's not affecting anything. Any hints? Thanks! Aaron
BrianKitts
what you have for your bitmap import should be fine as long as your have your max preferences set right (see image) customize -> preferences -> Gamma/LUT and make sure you don't put both the output gamma and vray's gamma (in the color mapping drop down) to 2.2 ..... or you'll be double doing it
Aaron2004
ARG...I have Viz. I don't have any of that stuff. Is it even worth using Gamma correction then in VIZ if I don't have those other options? When I put 2.2 in the Gamma section of Linear Color Mapping, I get a different result than when I put 2.2 in the Customize Menu. Does this make any sense? BrianKitts
couldn't tell ya, I've never played with the settings in viz, only max. but if you put your output gamma in the customize to 2.2 and leave vray's gamma level in colormapping @ 1 then you should get the same result as doing the opposite... max output @ 1 and vray @ 2.2 you may have to get this out of a viz user for settings.... martin walker
the Vray Sun / Environment stuff is great, but IMHO Im gonna wait until Chaos refine it in the next build of Vray. Ive had some nice results with it, but the whole process gets quite complicated and time consuming...physcial cameras, then gamma corrections.....not what you need when your deadlines are looming ! Im not slagging it down, I think its a fantastic development....just a little cumbersome at the moment
Aaron2004
So what do you use then? Just a direct Light?
martin walker
direct light, and play around with environment colour / multiplier
