Windows Vista benefits?

Hey guys,

I'm running my main workstation on a laptop right now, and it's maxed at 2GB RAM :( but I made sure to get a 64-bit chip....though it is the Turion64.

Will getting Vista benefit me much do you think? I do run into some issues with Vue's RAM management and eventually (ha) want to move to VRay so I'll have the proxy vs geometry issue then.

Also, can Vista and XP SP2 be BOTH run on a system? I'm sure we'll run into programs that wont work on Vista that do now on XP.

Well you could get the 64-bit version of XP then to ensure compatibility. The main issue at the moment is drivers - not all of the manufacturers have 64-bit ones available, printer ones especially it seems.

A 64-bit OS will allow you to address more RAM though - so its worth doing if you're hitting RAM issues (of course your apps need to be 64-bit as well to be able to do so).

also 2003 64 bit

XP vs Vista Benchmarks and keep in mind 2003 ...

Server 2003 outperforms XP, it installs

faster, it boots faster, it runs applications faster,

it manages programs better, it never slows down (even

after days of being left on) and it even gives better

frame rates in games over XP.

Almost every single program (bar none) that

I run on XP... I can run on Server 2003 and not only that,

but they run much faster on Server 2003. Some people say

"Server is not suited for use" but this is just not true.

Matt, how is it that Cebas can release all kinds of updates and service packs for Maya & C4D but nothing for 3D Studio? I mean we've been waiting since last year for a version of fR that will work with Max 9, but instead of that we get a new version of fR for Maya. I have a hard time believing that Maya is a bigger platform for Cebas than 3D Studio.

Rumor has it that Vista will in-validate your XP registration number if you upgrade your license. No information on what happens if you have a full (not upgrade from XP) version of Vista.

with just one look at the benchmarks on tomshardware who would ever use vista unless they were forced to?

if you want the new vista look on XP that is available with out the HUGE hit in performance.

the professional graphics benchmarking suite SPECviewperf 9.03 suffered heavily from the lack of support for the OpenGL graphics library under Windows Vista. This is something we expected, and we clearly advise against replacing Windows XP with Windows Vista if you need to run professional graphics applications. We are disappointed that CPU-intensive applications such as video transcoding with XviD (DVD to XviD MPEG4) or the MainConcept H.264 Encoder performed 18% to nearly 24% slower in our standard benchmark scenarios. Both benchmarks finished much quicker under Windows XP.

Vista vs. XP applications: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/page6.html

this and noting that 2003 is faster than XP what would you choose?

also we wonder when VISTA light the version that complies with the EU lawsuits will come out too (not to bundle software with OS that has competition & and to release code so others can better make there stuff work w/o advantage to only MS wares).

but I am almost positive that will be just as not fast as XP or 2k3

so......what are the benefits? the thread seem to have turned into the availability of the different version....

I read about the ram issue. How much can XP handle? 4gb seems plenty for now, although the motherboard can handle 8.

the major differences i can see are the aero interface, 3d app switching and widgets(ahem...apple... ahem).

Ill upgrade when quade cores can be bought for chips and ram comes out of vending machines.

It's not really a question of the platform's market share. The C4D/Maya versions are easier to update as they're standalone renderers and not integrated into the core software (only the translator is). The MAX version if completely integrated and its this that's taking the time. The programming teams on each version are also separate and have their own schedules.
