Hi, I would like your coments, good and/or bad. I'm still playing around with the lighting and the water pond.

Any tips are welcomed, also if you have any questions please ask. The theme of this house is based on the Bahamian flag, hence the colors.

Thanks.

This looks like a good start and if this is your very first rendering you deserve cudos, but there is a lot of work that still needs to be done.

-It desperately needs some GI. I'm not sure what program you used or if you have access to some sort of radiosity or GI solution but even if you don't you could follow this link for an excellent discription on how to fake it.

-you need to model some curbs between the road and grass areas

-the terrain could use some contour to it, even if it's subtle is makes a big difference.

-I'm not sure what that is in your background. You may want to look at adding some foliage to soften the horizon line instead of what you are using.

-All the materials are too flat. Use a noise map to add some uneveness to them for a quick fix.

I hope you find this usefull, and I look forward to seeing an update. If you make these changes you will notice a world of difference.

nice first job.

my comments are exactly what Brian said.

also, watch how you use mapping. you have some strange stuff going on with the roof tile mapping, and some other materials need properly mapping too.

Nice hedges btw.

this all looks like Viz/max stuff to me. typical usage of the free RPC plugin. :)

Yes, it is modeled in AutoCAD and rendered in Viz with RPCs. The hedges are home made hehe...

Brian:

I am strugeling with the lighting and I will try to do a solution similar to the link you sent me. I'm not sure, but I've heard that using a radiosity solution for exteriors is not a good idea. Anyhow, what I have set up here is an IES Sun (Auto exposiure) along with a ring of four omnis and an extra omni at the top and bottom, for a total of 6 omnis (multiplier of 1.0)and 1 IES Sun. I did this in an attempt to do a fakeradiosity solution and keep rendering times low. (I did have to add a set of four omnis per each RPC object for a total of 8 extra omnis illuminating only the trees. Those things render so dark otherwise. Even with the self illuminace turned up which makes them look radioactive.)

The rest of the stuff you mentioned is self explanitory and I will go ahead and update. The thing along the horizon is a horribly mapped wooden fence that I had not noticed was mapped incorrectly until you mentioned it :gebigeek: , thanx. Anyhow as soon as I make the corrections I will repost the images.

Strat:

I was going to go ahead and model the tiles of the roof individually but I found out that it was too computer expensive to do and would take too long to render. If you have any other sugestions or links on how to do the roof so that its not too time consuming or creates too many polygons, I'm all ears... ;) I modeled the hedges as chamfered boxes with sufficient subdivisions for the noise modifier to work, then I took the evergreen map (standard in Viz/Max)and placed it in the diffuse slot and a copy of it in the opacity map, but this one I tweaked in PS to make it blak and white. Then checked the 2 sided check box and thats it.

Anyhow, thanks for the crit guys stay tunned for the updates. If anyone else has any coments please by all means post them.

Cheers,

J.

Ernest,

Yes, the wooden door looks out of place. Its the quickest map I had handy. In your opinion, what do you suggest? A white door, maybe red? or perhaps one with glass? Maybe a white door similar to the grage door..hmmm.

Do you know of any door links where I can download some pics of doors to map on here?

Thanks, I will update.

J.

Hi JPS!

I also agree with the other guys here. Some material are a little too flat. Also the mapping for the roof looks "flat as a board" wich is not considering the spanish roof tiles you are using. I agree that modeling individual tiles for the roof is waaay to computer expensive, but I tried something that you can do: Model a spline with the roof profile and then extrude it to form an object with the upper face with the roof tiles profile.

If you DO want to use the individual spanish tiles just tell me your e-mail and I can send you some ready. I have already modeled that for myself.

VizWhiz, thanks for the link.

Tango, I am defenitly interested in the file. I have created several files but I'm very interested to see how the spline you created is cut by the hips of the roof. I have e-mail you in the e-mail you posted in your profile. Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

J.

  • 5 years later...

In addition to all other comments, you're going to have to do something with that grass (all veggies, but grass esp.) I would suggest trying some displacement mapping or, if too memory intensive, doing the grass in PS with some of the standard brushes...if memory serves there's a couple of grass type brushes in the default set. Nice work, keep going....and let's see the updates!

Very good Tim!!!

I never looked at the dates and was beginning to feel sorry for the chap :)

I'm sure he has improved a hell of a lot since then would be interesting to see what his work is like now 5 years later on with all the software improvements too.
