Devin Johnston
Starting a business is a hard thing to do especially if you’re doing it from scratch. You will have to purchase enough hardware and software to meet your needs which could easily be tens of thousands of dollars. Then you need to have a client base that will give you enough revenue to keep your business afloat. You will also need to find some time to meet with clients, make sales calls and do the accounting work all while working on the projects that you do have. Doing all of this your self is exhausting; you could easily spend 12+ hours per day doing this stuff and still not get everything done. I know that sounds harsh but it's the truth, so after all of that what do you need advice on?
alexg
Hi Jeffrey I've seen your past works, and you should have no problem in producing nice images. You seem to have good knowledge in hardware too. All you need now is a client, so what you need to do is advertise, advertise, advertise. The accountings etc, when it comes, deal with it later. Get some $$ in first

I'm not going to do something fancy at this early stage. Will be focus on still images and explore to animation later when I got the budget for the expensive hardware. Client is not huge issue for me. Just one thing that I concern a lot is management. Normally, say 4 people in a team, is it one person handle a project or having them doing seperate things like one modelling another rendering and one post process etc. Thanks for your comments. That's really calm me a bit.hehe. Yeah, advertising. Any good advice on that? should I send my profile and some of my works to developers? set up a website? alexg
Jeff Seems like you worry a lot. Don't worry. Management skills will come naturally, too much time spent thinking on it will lead you into stress. Just divide the manpower to their strengths and you will get by just fine. Read some marketing books is what I recommend, especially those for small businesses. Business Cards is the first step, as well as registering your business name, that is for legal issue. Then you will need to contact people you know about your services. Set up a small website to showcase some samples. After that, then all you can do is wait. Hopefully someone will contact you. rotten42
I would suggest at minimum taking a small business course in your area. You can have all the talent in the world but if you don;t know how to manage your business you will fail.
alexg
yeah, Ron is right. A short course is all you need for management skills The first thing you really need in starting your own business is to have the guts to do so.

Good management is needed but in M'sia or east M'sia doesn't seem to have such course. Specially when 3D field still kinda new in the market(my place). But I'll do some reading like alexg suggested before. Thanks again~!

A small business management course doesnt have anything to do with 3D. It'll teach you the basic principles of managing any business (all businesses have the same basic things that need to be considered/taken care of). They will cover things like marketing, budgeting, working with people (staff and clients), how to deal with accounts.....stuff like that. I'm sure there must be a school in your area that offers this kind of course Flip through the yellow pages. Good luck mate, hopefully one day I will have the balls to start my own company. I guess once Ive earned my wings it'll be a bit easier....or I'll just have bigger balls
