Revit Objects Combining by Layer in Max?

Have any of you guys sort this out I mean combining revit objects by layer into max doesn't seems to work whether using file link or import option. Using the workflow outlined for revit files is only usable for small projects but having big project with millions of revit object is a pain in the ass to work with.

I ususally spend a couple of hours collapsing similar objects down to single objects, so your 10,000 mullion objects get merged down to one. Then you can grab all the empty parent block objects and delete those.

 

Btw, I haven't investigated yet if Autodesk has improved the workflow in Max 9 yet, so this could be out of date.
