there are several solutions, both 3d and 2d. some are better than others and all have their weaknesses and strengths. both 2d and 3d people can be used in both animations and stills. it's up to the artist to determin which suits his needs best at the time. some are -

dosche design

marlin studios

got3d

lowpolygon 3d

axyz metropoly

poser

RPC

thats usually down to your photoshopping skills. a good artist can compose humans into his imagery seamlessly.

For images i always use 2d people in photoshop and i try to cut out my own from digital photos everytime. This ensured all images in your portfolio are unique.

When you use 2d people the most important thing to note is the direction of the light. If the light is on the wrong side, just flip the person.

Size is also important. The worst thing in the world is having giants in your images. Use reference to door heights and walls etc to get the correct height. I sometines model reference people (sticks) and render them on a seperate pass to use as reference in PS.

Shadows are also very important to grounding the person.

Brightness/contrast. I always adjust the brightness and contrast of a person to match the render. More often than not the photo person will be over saturated.

For animations some of the best 3d people i've seen are the lowpoly3d people. I think Sean DeBoer used them in his winning competition image. Correct me if i'm wrong. I have seen the animated ones do some weird movements (swaying bendy necks), but overall they look great.
