gav
was wandering if anyone could give me any constructive feedback on this university assignment? please go easy and remember that eveyone needs to start somewhere!! The idea was to import a autocad drawing into 3ds 4 and apply basic materials and lighting. http://www.cgarchitect.com/forum/filepush.asp?file=houserender9_1.jpg [ March 03, 2003, 04:20 PM: Message edited by: gav ]
Paul Griger
Hey gav, For constructive crits, here’s my $0.02: If the exercise is in textures and lighting, I’d say then that these areas could be addressed: 1. the overall lighting is hard to understand. Is this an outdoor lit scene? there doesn’t appear to be any direct sunlight or shadows from the sun being produced by the sun. 2. there are weird circles intersecting the white space on the right of the building, maybe some settings need to be refined 3. the roof texture is tiling [repeating] quite obviously. Can you use procedurals or a larger less obvious repeating texture? 4. the roof texture should also show some specular highlights from the sun 5. I can’t figure out what the white mass is on the left side of the building. Is that an interior wall? 6. the floor texture on the right interior part of the building also is tiling, and the intended material is not readily evident 7. can you use a better AA setting, right now there appears to be no compensation for AA 8. the ground texture seems very ambiguous, teal grass maybe? Just having one light source [sun] and the proper shadows would do this a lot of justice and would be a good place to start. then start fine tuning the textures. Keep us updated Best, paul
bigcahunak
Well... you definitely technically got some textures and light onto a DWG imported model; no one can argue with that. But, if its more than the technical aspect than I can only repeat each and every point Paul has brought up. Good luck.
gav
thanks for the tips! I had a few major problems with this model. i only had two days to produce it, and the autocad drawing took a day(the autocad model was in a lot more detail) so i ended up scrimping on materials! i had loads of problems applying maps onto objects, would it have been better to import just a basic plan from autocad then extrude all my objects from that? when i did apply a main light (as my sun) some objects were throwing out all kinds of wierd shadows?? I know it doesnt portray its purpose very well but yes that is an internal wall! The landscape surrounding the model is the next part of the assignment, would i be better off starting again?? Paul Griger
gav, having never acad to import into 3ds, i can't really give sound advice. that being said, i think it woul be easier to apply all lights and materials in 3ds, and not acad. i would think that you would have more control in 3ds, imho best, paul
