Brian Smith
I'm not to savvy in this area and could use some help. My 90 trial of McAfee expired yesterday so today i paid for the full service package. Now when i run Max, it doesn't shut down but it completely disappears from my screen. I have to open a new Max session if i want to continue. In the attached image you can see multiple sessions running in RAM but i can't access them anymore. It does this every ten minutes like clockwork. I suspected it was the virus protection, so i uninstalled and it stopped doing it. I reinstalled and it's doing it again. It doesn't help that today was day 2 of the online vray classes and i had to restart Max about 10 times during class. I don't know if i should uninstall and leave myself exposed to spam and adware (which would look really bad during an online class), or if i should keep it and live with restarting Max until i figure out what settings i need to change. If you have any ideas, please throw them my way. Thanks.
manta
Here use this untill you get it sorted out, I would have told you to just use this instead of buying mcafee, I've been using it for along time now, works great... I uninstalled Mcafee as soon as I got my laptop... http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html hope that helps...
Hazdaz
MacAfee and anything from Norton sucks. AVAST like was posted above is good, but I prefer AVG. Both programs are free and don't eat your resources for lunch like the ones that cost money.
Ernest Burden III
MacAfee and anything from Norton sucks. The one time I got a nasty virus on this workstation Macafee was installed, updated and running. Norton works better but is still a cycles hog, and now I'm getting an occasional BSOD from one of its 'services'. A free alternative sounds good, but I think that Norton will catch a virus for me, Macafee failed me.

Koper
Michiel, you write it like you're an expert on the matter 'AntiVir Guard' gets my vote as well as 'spybot'
Ernest Burden III
then you better stop watching pr0n on the internet... :-p Funny. Actually I got up at 6AM after three hours sleep to get back to work, only to find a helpful email from Microsoft saying I should click a link to get a security update for XP. As soon as I clicked it I was awake enough to realize that I had done a very dumb thing, and spent several hours getting rid of the virus. Doing so involved a removal tool from Symantec's site, but with Macafee running I shouldn't have gotten it in the first place.
Koper
yup, that was spyware you activated, they tell you your pc is really invected and that you need to download a piece of software to check and remove it, then you do it and it all starts again, everytime with another software to download. and everytime all of this happens it is an actual XP notification. this aint really a virus as it don't actually attack your data, it only tries to swamp your pc so you can't use it, thats why i use spybot, it actually called 'Spybot-search & distroy' perfect name

The Norton tool did. The thing is, I knew instantly I had a problem because I know better (when I'm awake) than to click a link in an email. Microsoft does not send emails telling customers to click for updates. So I immediately disconnected the computer from the internet and used another one to figure out what happened, then went back online just to visit the symantec site for their online virus scan which found the beasty. A Spybot scan didn't. Have any of the PCworld or similar sites tested the anti-virii products, including the free ones mentioned in this thread, head-to-head? I hate Norton but I've never gotten an infection with it installed.
Hazdaz
^ You might wanna go check out some site slike PC Magazine or Maximum PC - they seem to test out the latest anti-virus programs once a year or so. Which ever one is rated tops usually changes year to year, but Norton guzzling CPU-cycles never seems to change. Also, don't confuse a virus with malware (such as spyware). Usually there are seperate tools to protect you from each. Like mentioned above, I use AVG for virus protection and have been for many years now... and all free. I have it continueally scan my system, and then have it do a full scan every night. But for spyware I use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. You don't need that to run all the time - once a week or once a month is fine... BUT the reason you can get away with running it so infrequently is because I run FireFox for my browser. Get FF - the amount of spyware you get will be reduced dramatically. Same deal with the amount of Spam you get in your inbox.
