Landmark Houses

Landmark Houses;

''The 'Landmark Houses' programme is envisioned specifically for the site at Lower Mill Estate, in the Cotswold Water Park, where we have invited a number of architects, such as Will Alsop, Eva Jiricna, Sutherland Hussey, Richard Meier and Partners, Roger Sherman, Sarah Featherstone, Alison Brooks, Piers Gough, Greg Lynn, etc. - an older generation at the peak of their inventiveness, but still in wonder at the world out there, and a younger generation in the process of re-invention as they gather a second breath - and asked each one to speculate on the architectural poetics and ecological considerations for the design of a 'landmark house' within such a context.'

What do you think about that designs???

I've always disliked the "suburban neighborhood" concept where you have hundreds of houses that are similar in design; I call them cookie cutter houses. In my dreams I had envisioned a neighborhood where all the houses in it were completely different from each other, but still maintained a standard of quality in both construction and design. That's what I like about these Landmark Houses they seem to fit into my idea of what a modern architecturally rich neighborhood should be. The one fear I would have about living in a place like this is what happens when your neighbor builds a house next to yours which is horribly ugly, then your dream home would be scarred by the monstrosity next door. The concept is good and for those adventurous and rich enough it may be practical.

I always felt a bit sorry for will alsop. He's got a really crappy surname. Kind of like "he's all sop and no trousers" or maybe "Ergh! its all-soppy" or:

"...well thats definately an 'alsop.'"

"What do you mean, 'an alsop.'?'"

"You know, one of those things we're 'alsoposed to do' but nobody wants to"

"oh, one of those"

I hate waiting for renders, it melts my brain. But the end of the day isnt far off and then Will-Allstop working........ hahahahahaha

What's wrong with modern suburban design in the UK (and the US) is that it's not modern-it's pastiche.

In Georgian and Victorian architecture, entire streets were filled with repeating structures and it worked. The aesthetics and scale were perfectly thought out.

Now we just build 3/4 scale mock Victorian or Georgian with gaps between.

It's time to get away from that. I'm all for modern design-people are too scared of it for some reason.

And then there is Alsop..

Some of his stuff, I get the feeling, is so self indulgent it defies belief.

I agree though, that we seem to be stuck in a house building time warp, but its going to take a pretty brave housebuilder / planning authourity to change that. Certainly in GB anyway.

Most people are very traditional when it comes to houses, harking back to the good old days, solid buildings of brickwork, and tiles on the roof. You must remember Joe public doesnt get to see what could be achieved with a little bravery, for similar costs.

House builders know that this is a safe market, and they are under no pressure to change. They would be risking profit for acclaim... They do "cookie cutter" buildings as they can keep costs down and profits up.

I dont agree with it, I would love to see some new ideas, like the Dutch do, but its gonna take quite an event to change years of "mock tudor"..

....beyond design of current suburban housing, i would say build quality is a huge problem. as noted above, developers are concerned about their bottom line. the cheaper something can be constructed, the better their bottom line. unfortunately craft and skill is increasingly a thing of the past. i am hoping it makes a comeback.

The practice I work for does some work near those landmark houses. It's frustrating submitting our more modern designs to the same planning authority and practically getting laughed out the office whereas some slick marketing sailed this development through the planning process. But that's architecture for you!
