Material Light

I'm fairly new to MR, but here's what I'd do:

1. Select a sample slot and change the material type from Standard (or Architectural, if you're in VIZ) to mental ray.

2. Basic Shaders section: click None beside Surface, and choose Glow (lume).

3. Glow (lume) Parameters: set the Glow color to the color you want your light to be, and increase the Brightness to your liking.

When you render with Final Gather, the object will give off light.

Here is what works...

A+D Material

Diffuse Slot: Glow --> add a falloff (p/p) in the glow slot!

Addit.Light/Self Illum --> output

And use FG

I tried this. I have a test scene with one light. I turned that one light off and expected the scene to be lit, even if it was ever so slightly, by the objects with this material. I rendered a black screen.

Should my brightness be really high (currently 6)? My output is 3.

Or do I HAVE to have a light on for this to work?

Basically, I'm not getting an object that emits light.

Doing more testing...hopefully you have some advice.

I have tried placing the Lume in the special color/self illum slot in the Special maps.

This seems to actually emit light. It works quite well. tweaking settings to see if output and brightness need to be amped up very high.

Edit:

Upon further testing, you don't need very high settings at all. It is pretty blotchy, but that can be worked out.

Hi,

I only use this material in combination with 'real' lights. Basicly I use the material for the glow/glare effect and the light for the lighting.

I've set my hands quickly on a testscene. For now I don't know why the 'range' of the light is limited... It's strange but I got no time to set my hands on it now. For now your solution might be in the combation of lights and materials.

rgds,

nisus
