daniohayon
I'm puting together the best system I can and wanted to get some feedback on the combination (even though I based most of it on this forum...). I work mainly with Video and Max/Mental Ray/VRay Asus p5w deluxe Evga Geforce 8800GTX (768) Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (Quad) G.Skill 4GB(2x2gb) DDR2 800 - 4 of them $3,373.94 I want to go as high as I can with RAM. But I'm wondering since the only ram I found that has 2gb (per stick) has 800fsb, if it would be batter to go with 4GB total and have the 1066fsb. AJLynn
This is fine. Overkill in many regards (is that 16GB RAM?!) but fine. DDR2-800 is actually for up to a 1600 fsb - long story, don't ask, you don't want to know, but it's the fastest stuff for that motherboard. Look at the number of RAM slots available on the MB before ordering all that, because 4 of the 2x2gb kits would require 8 slots and I'd bet that MB won't support that, nor will any Core2 MB I've seen. The 768MB video card is so overkill I can't think of the words to express it.
lambros
I got the 640MB 8800 and it is very very fast
daniohayon
Thanks guys. The ram plan is to get 8GB (4x2). And I gues I can get the 640mb for the VC. Any screens models recomendations. I sit in front of it all day, my eyes are red and I think that it should be well calculated into the system overall quality. I'm used to two 17" screens but have one 20 at work and it works very good. Also, I need a new work station at work and my company works with HP. So, I need to find something close using the customizing system they have. What would be the 8800GTX match in this case? http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/MiddleFrame.asp?page=config&ProductLineId=433&FamilyId=2444&BaseId=19628&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=
alex3d
are you going to host email client server for yahoo? 8 GIGS??????????? i work full time doing 3d since 2002, and i never saw a real prove to go with more than 2 gigs in a graphics computer. i work with 1 gig files in photoshop( 24 by 36 inches renderings) , huge amount of poligons in max, hours rendering tasks, and i never ear my hard drive swaping, buy a good case, hard drives, gigalan network, etc etc and less memory
daniohayon
i never saw a real prove to go with more than 2 gigs in a graphics computer All I see is users trying to get the 3rd gig switch on to get a bit more juice out of their XP. I assume that 4gb would be the least needed to run with the new quads. I might be wrong...
AJLynn
4 would be reasonable for many CG users, especially with 4 cores. I could see using that much with, say, a really huge photon map and then rendering high res to a framebuffer with 3 of your cores while using the 4th for Photoshop. I've managed to run out of memory on a 2GB box with a particularly nasty set of Autocad files and an out-of-control SeaMonkey (like a "Runaway Netscape" but rarely seen in the wild). Anyway, RAM is cheap enough that with a new box, especially if you get XP64, I don't see a compelling reason not to get 4, and 8 would not be out of the question depending on anticipated usage. daniohayon
Well, 4 sounds like a good plan... As far as video card, (still trying to find good configuration for the HP system) what is the difference in performance between the 8800GTX and the Quadro FX series, what would be a match to the 8800? daniohayon
Another thing, any case/power supply recommendations?
AJLynn
Case is all personal preference, just make sure it's got good cooling. Power supply - 500+ watts, the more amps at +12V the better, and then personal preference comes in, e.g. you can get models with improved efficiency or quiter, etc.
daniohayon
I'm not sure I know how to determine the amps at 12v, is it 34 in this PS image? Then what is enough?
AJLynn
It is. 34 is quite good.
