LordRaven
Hi guys, Sorry for having opened another “new workstation thread”, but I have browsed through the last pages of these section and did not find the answers I was looking for. I plan to buy 2 new workstations based on 5345 xeon processor but I am still having trouble deciding upon some issues. First, here are the specs that I am considering: ram: 2x Kingston 2GB DDR2-667 PC5300 CL5 Fully Buffered DualRank x4 mainboard: DSBF-DE, INTEL 5000P+6321ICH, socket LGA771 proc: 2 x Xeon 5345 video: BFG GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, DDR3, 2 x DVI The main issue that I am concerned about is the main board. I am not very tech-savvy and I don’t know what are the criteria for taking a decision in this case (except the fact that it must be LGA771) I really hope that I can get some help on this. Also, the guy at the computer store told me that there is not too much difference between the 5345 and 5335 in terms of rendering performance. Should I go with the cheaper one, without having tons of regrets later? I would really appreciate any kind of suggestions and advices you might have! Regards, Alex
AJLynn
That looks like a pretty kickass box. As for the 5345 vs 5335 issue - it's 2.33GHz vs 2.0GHz, and processor speed translates almost directly to render performance, so the computer store guy is wrong - the 5345 is 16.6% faster than the 5335 for rendering. Whether or not it makes economic sense would depend on the marginal cost of the 5345 as a percentage of the cost of the entire computer.
LordRaven
Thank you very much for the feedback AJlynn! Regarding the mainboard, the one that I have mentioned above is ok, or you would suggest another one?
AJLynn
Usually you can't go wrong by picking whatever the most popular Asus board for your CPU is. I don't know much about Xeon boards so I can't be more specific. Also, with 8 cores and a Geforce 8800, get a damn good power supply.
LordRaven
Thanks again Ajlynn, I will go for the specs mentioned above. Regards, Alex
SunGlare
Yes, power will jump of the roof. I was concerned when i calculated new computer power supply at 1100 W!!! Its a microvawe oven, running all work day! Some wires can get hot. Be careful, when you put your monster on night shift, make sure you got fire alarm installed. AJLynn
Try tomshardware.com, anandtech.com or similar sites - they run tests and write reports on these things.
