Devin Johnston
There used to be a 3Dmax.ini file inside the root folder of Max where things like texture paths were stored, in Max 9 I can no longer find it. I used to configure this file to point to where all the RPC's and textures were on the server since all the copies of Max are not full installs, now I can't find it and I don't know how to do this, can anyone help? Chad Warner
It's stored in the user directory now (documents and setting\username\local settings\app data\autodesk\3dsmax\)
Devin Johnston
Thanks Chad, I don't understand why they decided to move this.
Chad Warner
I think so it can be customized if more than one person uses the machine. There is way to fix it though: http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/21484-setting-custom-material-libs-default-max-9-a.html -Chad
Devin Johnston
Would I need to do that to every machine on my render farm or just the stations that have people using Max or does it matter?
Chad Warner
I don't think it matters as long as all the bitmap paths and plugin paths are consistent across the network. I'm not sure though, we've got all of our computers so the ini file is not in the user directory.
Devin Johnston
Chad I've got another question about managing render jobs. There are certain computers on the farm that I don't want people to use for rendering, is there a way either in backburner or through a 3rd party program to keep people from having access to these machines? Chad Warner
If you are in backburner, and you choose the server and right click, there is an option called "Week schedule" if you choose this option you can disallow the computer from rendering during certain hours of the week. This way you can still render after hours if you want.
Devin Johnston
I've used that before but I'm really trying to manage the computer use in the office. I'd like to be able to assign X number of specific computers for each user instead of allowing them to choose which machines they can use. Or I'd like to be able to create a group and only allow users to use computers from that group.
Claudio Branch
I am testing out Qube! right now and it will allow you to "cluster" selected groups of nodes/machines and assign a specific job to only them. I believe the licenses are $250-275 per machine. You can contact Qube! and request a number of test licenses for a trial period. They have been very supportive.
