I have just come across this link to a pdf explaining the arch & design materials, put together by Mental Images, on the My mentalray.com news forum http://mymentalray.com/forum/showthread.php?t=276

http://xsi.wiki.avid.com/images/7/77/Architectural-library.pdf

Even though it says XSI it is very relevant to Max users.

Many thanks to Master Zap for supplying the link

Hi Justin,

This is basicly the same as the help provided in max, with that difference that it IS for max instead of XSI.

The GOOD thing about this pdf though, is that it explains the names of shaders instead of just the function hidden behind a button ,-))

rgds,

Man, sometimes I wish I wasn't on the other side of the world, I would love to hear Master Zap.

Considering the amount of RTFM's lately and the compete lack of interest in delving further into Mental than Final Gather, I thought it would help. The funny thing is that there are those who would sooner read this type of PDF than read the manual . ( I just have to look at how many times I have seen a link to the Vray online help). It also helps people who don't quite understand that Mentalray is fundimentally the same in XSI, Maya, Max etc.

What alot of people tend to forget is that even if you have the best FG settings, if your surfaces are not set up properly the render will still look crap. In fact earlier yesterday I was trying to explain to a friend why the diffuse level on his chrome materail should be way lower than what it was. Later when I stumbled across this PDF I said , "here read this it explains it properly".Only then did it make sence to him.
