keyboard cowboy
hi everyone, does anyone have a good reliable method for creating realistic topography in 3dsmax? the final model needs to be manageable, meaning i can work with it's polygons to create roads, etc... i have a high-resolution aerial photo to start with... thanks, KC

mskin
i have struggles a ton with this one. i rarely have a site on a completely flat surface, but i am learning that i can fudge it a little bit. One of my probloms is i never know how my boss intends to utilize a model so i am forced to model the entire building, site etc... anyway, a method that has worked well for me is to... 1. create the contours in autocad using splines and import them into max. 2. create a terrain compound object. i might apply the spline normalize modifier to the lines first. 3. i have never been satisfied with the outcome of the terrain object so i create a nurbs surface, conform it to the terrain, then convert it to a poly. from there its been pretty simple to bring my site line work into the model and start cutting out the roads, etc.... check out the 3das tuts on that one. anyway, thats my method, works for me.... good luck
