Dual Core And Cinema 4d,

Recommended Posts

hey guys sorry i havent been around for a while, been really busy : )

anyhow, ive just purchased a mac dual core mac pro, and i was wondering how much faster should it be compaired to say my general mac core duo,

ive rendered a scene on both computers and the mac pro won but only by about 5-10 mins,

is there anything you need to set up in cinema 4d to get the best results, im using version 9.....

ordering 10 today tho:)

Depends on the difference in speed in GHz, and whether the Pro has enough RAM to render on 4 CPUs. Also, in Cinema the multi-CPU multiplier for 2 CPUs is 1.85 (pretty efficient) and for 4 is close to 3 (not as efficient).

The switch to 10 will make it much faster since it's not a Universal Binary before version 9.6.

YEP its a mac, thing the majority of design software at the moment runs though rosetta, which slows it down, where as universal programes run straight of the mac operating system, the new adobe suite is going to be universal i cant wait for that...

its only got a 1gb in,

im looking at buying some more, im sure i read somewhere you should have 1gb of ram for each processor, as a minimum....

is that right?

thanks dan

I'll parse that again:

When Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel, they provided 2 ways to run software on Intel Macs: emulation (Rosetta) and native code (Intel-only binaries or "Universal" which is an app that contains executables for both platforms). Since there's no reverse-Rosetta (for running Intel-only apps on PowerPC) most developers are transitioning to Universal Binaries.

Cinema went Universal in version 9.6, Maya in 8.5, Sketchup in 6, Maxwell in a recent 1.1 update, Adobe apps aren't yet (but Photoshop CS3 beta is) and neither are Microsoft, though Office is almost obsolete for me.

I'd say thats your issue right there! If I read you correctly, your Mac Pro is a Dual CPU dual core. This splits your 1G of ram to 256MB for each CPU to render with. I dont think there is a "minimium" of 1G/CPU as you state. The minimum is dictated by your needs an bugdet. I sure would recommend 1-2G/CPU tho.

lol, i love my mac.. lol as most mac users do i guess.

anyhow thanks for ya help guys,

im going to try and buy another 3gb, so that be 1gb per processor, then maybe update to two in the future,

thanks again dan

all i know is that my render times were cut to 1/3 after i got my dual-dual core 3 GHZ mac PRO... and I went from a dual proc G5.

Then again, I also stuffed if w/ 6 GB RAM, just for kicks.

For sure 1 GB is not enough - not sure of the overhead of OSX, but you can never go wrong w/ more RAM.

MacOS will run on a 512MB system, no problem (I think that's what the low end Macs have now) but that wouldn't be enough for pro work. It doesn't get the bizarre bloating that Windows gets but when you get into having multiple gigs of RAM, unless you're using Vista it's not the OS overhead that's the problem.

If you're ordering RAM, two of the best places to do it are http://www.macsales.com and http://www.newegg.com. The first one is easiest for finding the specific RAM you need, but NewEgg sometimes has the best prices. Of course, I'm not sure how all this applies if you're ordering from the UK.
