Hallo everybody!

I'm an architect from greece and I have a question on how do I make windows, doors or any kind and shape opening in a wall.Untill now I used formz where the things were quite simple (solid operations).

In 3ds for example how can I make a circle hole on a poly or meshed wall (box or plane). Are there any relative tutorials for polymodeling?

Thanx in advance

Tolis

You can use the Boolean function which you will find under Compound Objects.

Its a very simple method where you draw one shape and subtract it from another.

So if you have a wall, you will draw a box the size you want the window to be, and then boolean it out of the wall. This will leave a hole in your wall the same size and shape as the box you created.

Hope this helps.

Open your user reference in Max, then type Boolean in the search bar, it will explain it a bit better.

Cheers :D

Hi...

you can Use The Boolean Option...

Or you can do one Thig....make 2 shapes of your wall and the other one opening shape.....

and then draw one shape on it with wall and opening ....and click off...(start New Shape)

I think it will work...

If you requires anything further pls contact me...

Have a nice DAy...

Ooooooooookay!

There lots of toys like a syntesizer, and gnomes should eat lots of booleans  Soy beans have protein, but not nearly enough for an organic Rhino. Rhinos play Snap with toy cards. 4 toy Rhinos extended their lines to fly bootykites :) :) :)

Yes?

Guys please reply in english, your answers dont only help those asking the questions, you help lots of other members in the process.

Cheers, I was only kidding, wasnt making fun of your language.

Hi Tolis,

to sum up you can either use Booloean (the easy one), 2d rectangular extruded shapes (the cleaner one), shapemerge, or in the new version of 3ds max there is also ProBoolean, which is better (there is a long dispute on this on another thread) than the classic Boolean.

Generally cutting holes with boolean operations can get tricky, depending on the topology of your object, so whenever you do make one, check your whole model to see if anything has gone wrong with your polygons.

Well when I am making walls with openings for my houses I do the following.

Bring in a CAD file with the floor plans and elevations. Then I put in a Grid in the XY or ZX direction and activate it. Then I just either use the line or rectangle tool to get the outline of the wall, then also draw round the window and door openings. I then make one of the lines an editable spline, attach the other lines/rectangles and voila as long as all the vertex's are welded then you can just use the Extrude modifer to give the wall your required thickness.

I am still on Max 7 and I used to use the Boolean operation but it created soo many problems. I am just glad that I was told about this way of modelling its so much cleaner.

thanks vergil.....it mean so many ways to model and done job in 3ds max....

more deep i learn more excited it is. nothing wrong to see other people method as long as you can detemine what you want at the end. we must understand that all about time vs. quality especially for them to make money. You can get same result (quality) but different time because using different method. that all experent will telling you (for people self learning) because we must go through this process. No short cut.... it true... the journey just started to people like me.... god bless you all who helping to create free tutorial.
