aligrafix
Dears, I am going to buy a new video card to work with max and maya as well as compositing. my friend has NVidea 7950 GT (256 MB, 256 bit) 3D card which is $ 350. I went to the vendor and asked him for this card but it wasnt in stock. He told me to take NVidea 8800 GTX (320 MB, 320 bits) which is $365. Now which one is best as we go for 3d work? Thanks. AJLynn
I've decided that if an answer to a question can be found with Google inn under 15 seconds, I'm not going to answer the question. Just wanted you to know that, as it's applicable here.
slawnick
I'd take the 8800; it's in stock. The extra 15 bucks gets you more ram and DirectX10 hardware.
aligrafix
THanks Steve for your reply. I was very confused. couldnt find enough information regarding 7950 (512MB) and 8800 (320MB). Regards
Macpod
Is that how much an 8800 cost in pakistan? Thats amazing. normally, they are 2.5 times mroe expensive than the 7950. Ironically, the 7950 seems to be overpriced. PS obviously the 8800GTX is better. As far as i know it will not have any problems functioning with MAX and i believe the new vista drivers are out. That card will be incredibly fast with Max since max supports D3D now, but i dont know about maya.
aligrafix
I have mentioned above about the 8800 GTX (320MB) which is approx a couple of dollars but the 8800 GTX (768MB) is expensive than 7950. Well, i needed the best option between 8800 GTX( 320MB) and 7950 (512 MB), video cards.
Macpod
oh, thats called the GTS around here. anyway, if the 8800gts is a few dollars more than definately get it. its faster than the 7950 and it supports dx10. the 7900 series cards have been or are been phased out. although a 7950gt will still be blazingly fast for 3d max. I suppose the 8800gts would be better if you regularly model whole cities. But get it anyway since its cheap now. a month ago it was a couple hundred more(im talking about the GTS, the GTX was 500 more)
aligrafix
Ok, thanks. I am going to purchase the 8800 (320MB). I was confused because of one thing that 7950 has 512 MB memory and it is 256 bit video card but 8800 video card is 320 MB video card and 320 bit. so, problem was that reducing the memory in 8800 with increased bit, will perform better performance in viewport and textures than 7950? Well, after your replies, i am gonna purchase 8800 . Thanks
Macpod
I have heard that 512mb memory on a 7900 series card is actually an overkill since the card itself creates a bottleneck, ie it doesnt process fast enough to utilise the extended memory. I dont believe the 8800 would be slower than a 7950 in any concervable environment. no need to have any second thoughts at all with the 8800. you'll have one of the fastest cards out there, especially considering the price.
