Tommy L
This is coming up to deadline time. Still have to work on the foreground path and pool surround. Any advice on the water? The pool is formed polished dark grey concrete, so it will be dark, but it dont look right. Original photo is attached as well. Anyhow, crit away, Cheers! Stephen Thomas
Hi Tommy, great image shaping up very nicely! Foliage looks amazing, are you using OnyxTree? Lighting/shadows on palms looks good, but elsewhere shaows look a bit strange. Not sure what is causing the dark soft shadows on the far side pool edge, is it the palm at left of shot? If so I think you may need to increase your subdivs or shadowmap size depending on what type you are using. Vase in foreground loks like it is floating in mid air, shadow is too sharp and black and seems to be in opposite direction to rest of scene. I think a little transparency to the glass would help, seems too mirror-like. Perhaps a falloff on the water reflections? Not really sure, ripples look nice though, subtle. As for the concrete, I think either a specular or glossiness map would break up the uniformity of this. Arroway have a nice selection of concrete textures all of which come with bump and specular map and are available for free download at a lower resolution which I find is actually good enough a lot of the time. http://www.arroway.de/textures/03/en/index.html P.S. who's the nosy neighbour? Looks like the guy from 'Home Improvement'!
dinhtuan
Very very impressed Thomas! Trees are photo or 3D? is the pool 3D also? Great work!
Joel182
Heya Good work looks cool! The building and the palm trees work well! The only crits I could find is the building looks a bit grey and flat ( on the grey areas ) could just be the distance of the cam though. Also the paths look a bit odd, and theres a round shadow on the right hand side path/edge of pool, that I can't see a source of so it looks like it shouldn't be there. The water is a cool touch, maybe make it a bit more transparent so you can see some of whats underneath it?? thats just personal taste though But apart from that good image keep it up! hope this helps. Trevor Tizard
Hi Tom, Looking good fella. As the others said - great trees (onyx?) and vegetation. Glass appears to be the same material as the water - needs to be more transparent. As for the water, if you are using Vray this link may be of some use: http://www.alzhem.com/ Kepp us posted. Tommy L
Thanks guys. Plants/palms are Xfrog. Bamboos are onyx. Anything that was displacement I had to do in a seperate pass and i had to render at low res for now due to crashing, so i didnt do the comp properly yet (hence floating pot, wierd grass etc) Still, im happy with the bones of it. Could really do with help on the water, not necessarilly technical, just the looks. Crits welcome on the design as well !!
Stephen Thomas
For water I tend to start with a murky brown colour for diffuse. Noise map in the bump slot, standard for smooth water, fractal more choppy. Fully reflective with fresnel falloff. Here's a test image to demonstrate:
Tommy L
Latest. Nearly finished. Just need the background photoshopping and a glass arly finished. Just needs a glass overhaul and the background photoshopping. The pebbles are poking through the slabs of rock on the right as well, but its a bugger to get that to render so i may leave it. Crit away!

mahorela
nice tommy I think you have some overly reflective surfaces here.....your water and definitely your glass (it's a little too mirror like and draws my eye). I also think that on the pool gutter you could bump and tile your concrete texture some more. very nice lighting
