Scott Schroeder
UVW mapping assigns mapping coordinates to your object. UVW unwrap allows you to unwrap said coordinates to allow you to take those into a program like photoshop and paint on the texture so when you bring it back into max it will align with your objects current UVW's. I know this is a dirty way of explaining this, but it's a really deep subject. Please refer to the max help files, they can explain it far better than any forum posts. Search for UVW and UVW unwrap and you should find what you need as far as information.
