Michael Emo
Hi all, How would you create this roof? I'm having trouble with it rendering any sort of detail at all. I am using VRAY and no materials have been applied. -Used LINE, and then traced each area of the roof, based off the CAD file. -Selected one LINE and ATTACHed the other areas. -CONVERTed TO EDITABLY POLY. -Then I selected each set of intersecting points and WELDed them together. So in essence it is a one-piece mesh now. But you can see from the odd shadowing that perhaps I should have done this different, or created seperate polygons? Is this a bad way to create a roof of this sort? Can someone help me out? It's a basic shingle roof so I figured I'd apply a shingle materials for it before final render. Thanks, M
Ricardo Eloy
Hi, Michael! The only thing I would do different would be NOT attaching all the splines together. I would convert each one into an editable poly and only then attach them. This will keep each polygon perfect.
Michael Emo
Thanks Rick! I will fix the roof and see how it turns out! I sort of suspected that might be another way to do it, but it helps to get a realiable opinion before I make all the changes. I appreciate the help Michael
batteryoperatedlettuce
The shading is down to the smoothing groups. There's nothing wrong with modeling it the way you suggested, but when you weld things together you will usually find that smoothing issues occur, as the two faces you weld may have shared a smoothing group prior to welding. go to editible poly/ polygon (sub object level) > select all and then go down to the "polygon properties" roll out. Either hit clear all or auto smooth and the shading problem should be solved. contrary to the above advice - I would definitely weld this into a single element, this will allow you to chamfer if required, or perform more complex modeling techniques if you need to model tiles etc.
Michael Emo
Thanks Battery! I didn't know that. I will try it right now. I already recreated using LINES > Conv. Poly and that seemed to work pretty well. But good to know I was on the right track the other way too. I'm going to go read up on smoothing groups now. sterealkey
Yip, understanding smoothing groups is a real life saver. I used to get so irritated when my mesh freaks out, and then I'd try to remodel and it does the same thing again, but taking a few seconds to understand smoothing groups sorted it out.
