sterealkey
What I usually do when I struggle with a material is to download it and then analyse how it was done, you will learn a lot of cool techniques this way. go to vray-materials.de You will find most common materials there, but try not to use them, instead try to recreate them, otherwise you will get lazy. Crazy Homeless Guy
i spent time last week struggling with a decent brushed stainless. this is what i wound up using for the project... not perfect, but you are welcome to using it. i wound up using a image map for the brushed part. i know it is possible to create the brush with procedural textures, i did it with a map because i had a map available. i think the glass i included originated from the website above. maybe a few tweaks, i can't remember. i think it was called CrystalGlass. ts. kippu
stainless and glass depend much on the environment you work on...so take care of that

batteryoperatedlettuce
Can I prolongue this discussion for a while and call for other people to give examples of success they've had with rendering brushed, satin or hairline finish steel? I get many projects from HK where they just want to upgrade the common areas etc and I've often had to produce this kind of effect. Up to now I've just been using blury metal with a map rather like the one used above and some ansitropy. Anyone got some more ideas?

jtmdr
A confession... About a year ago I became obsessed (somewhat crazily) about how to do "proper" stainless steel. Gurrr...... The best sample(s) I could come up with are here. Several things I learned: Stainless is entirely dependent on scene lighting. These images are all done with the SAME bump map created in Photoshop (pshop/ blur) and then applied to each item in a different fashion. (varying amounts amounts of bump map mostly) there are only two lights in this scene (omni & spot). I'd intended to do a tutorial on this but never finished - it became long. If you still have any interest, I'll forward (maybe complete) the tutorial. I did learn that "proper" stainless can slow a render to a crawl. Perfect everything else in the scene, then start toying with the stainless. There are some other great samples on this board, but this is what I was able to come up with.
