Josh1587140445
I am currently working on a model and as usual the boss doesn't understand the fact that less is more. Wanting to see the whole picture including the site. :angesigh: And that is where my problem lies. There is extensive topo and so much going on that a multi sub-objects material would take forever just to isolate the areas in the mesh. What would you say would be the technique to accomplish this? Here is an image for reference.
David Barbarash
You could allways render out an airial view of your ground plane with everything else turned off, but with your proper lighting setup, then paint your ground onto the areas you want them, being carefull to follow the lay of the land. Then crop and use as a diffuse map in a material slot of your choice. This will give you an idea of the ground plane without having to model any more than you allready have, just keep in mind that it's going to look flat and smooth. On the other hand, do you have a CAD line drawing of your site plan? If so it's simple to import those lines into your 3d program, and shapemerge them into your mesh where the program (atleast 3d studio will) automatically select the polygons created by the shapemerge, allowing you to easily seperate out material ID's or detaching them into seperate objects. Wow that was a long sentence. David Barbarash
Josh1587140445
yeah I do have the contour lines in CAD. And the shapemerge method is exactly how I cut the roads into the terrain. But to do it for every element may take a long time to do. The whole project is still in the design stage. So I think I might try you painting method. STRAT
i'd definately use the shape merge option to separate the meshes. also, like Dave mentions, a hi-res plan view render of the ground could be nicely pianted up in photoshop then flat mapped back onto the model.
