IRmap & Light cache noise problems

This is my first thread, so here goes.

I'm working on an animation and have some issues with what appears to be noise and lack of (or too much) bounce in the corners of the doors in the model and the extra illumination within the sofa. --please see attachment.

Its really bugging me, as usual work is a compromise of quality versus render time in order to meet the deadline, and my settings are reasonably high as it is...(any higher the renderers will crash), but I've still got this problem. It may be the models that I have to use from our library, but I don't know, I think I'm overlooking something....The exterior detail (around the gutter for instance) does not show this same noise problem and has less illumination compared to the interior.

Glossy reflections are off,

I'm using IRmap as my first bounce, Light Cache as my second,

in both cases I'm pre-rendering the IRmap and L.C. to a file every 20frms and then bringing it back in. I've included the settings and a Vray light setting as an attachment also.

My Vray lights (in the window frms and at the open side) are set to save IRmap, and the rooms have extra spotlight fill lights. There is really plenty of light in there.

.....(maybe all the instances set to Save with IRmap are causing the problem).

Can anyone suggest anything.

Off the top of my head, here are a few things...

Your irmap hemispheric subdivisions seems quite low, could maybe do with increasing. In your irmap, if you check the 'check sample visibility' box then it will check all samples to see if they are actually visible before adding them to your irmap. Checking this can help avoid light leaks but just to warn you it will make your rendertime sky high. Oh while im thinking about it, you might want to render your irmap every 10 frames instead of 20... just to be on the safer side.

Make doubly sure that all your materials are vray materials and also if possible try to make everything solid (or more accurately, not just one-sided)

Your sample size for your lightcache seems tiny. I would be inclined to raise it to like 6 maybe 10 mm (or possibly more?), and increase your subdivisions to something like 3000. Also, you're setting your lightcache mode to flythrough right?

Cheers, Andy.

Ay, Light Cache mode is set to flythough, and the cam is slow enough for 20frms incremental.

The other guy here adjusted the settings last night and we've cured the problem with noise around the corners and the excess illumination within the sofa, though we don't know what was causing it.

. I have included the settings so you can see the changes, which echo what you suggested.

1-Increase hem Subdivs and interpolation

2-Increase Light Cache sample size and subdivs, ( I thought 0.0001 is a bit small).

(Please see attached images.)

We've also gone for Adaptive Subdivision antialiasing to speed thngs up, though this has probably contributed towards the new noise problem on the walls.

We have noise throughout the image but we are not concerned about this, its more important that the image is clean and the dvd is out on time for next week, (got a lot more to render yet).

Personally, I reckon it had something to do with the tiny Light Cache sample rate versus the subdivisions, and the number of hemispherical subdivisions on the IRmap.

...thought for the day, -borrow from Peter to pay back Paul-,

(if you can afford it)

Yeah I think that is probably the culprit.... although ive just noticed in your qmc settings you have put your subdivs down from 8 to 5. This might be something to do with the noise you are still getting.

Either way though the image looks great. Good luck with animation
