sdds
hey chaps, I am trying to improve my workflow & need a bit of advice. I know a lot of you start your modeling in autocad then detail & touchup in max/viz etc. I use C4d and its a great modeler and all but is a bit slow working on buildings and architecture. Had a play with sketchup, its fun, easy to use but mesh management as far as exporting looks like a nightmare. Importing a quick building into cinema is heavily triangulated and looks like a mess, maybe doing something wrong here.
AJLynn
You can quickly untriangulate that by using the Untriangulate command in Cinema (try it with and without N-Gons and see which works better for your models) and then the Optimize command. I do that kind of thing with Sketchup and Cinema or Max all the time (and it's much easier to optimize the model in Cinema).
sdds
That has helped a bit but maybe I need to manage my mesh better in sketch up. Triangulation is not a prob really, just might be a pain for texture mapping. Ho can you see the hidden mesh in sketchup, show hidden geometry does not show everything. AJLynn
Show hidden does show everything important... even mesh lines in curves... It's true that most Sketchup modeling is not done well - I find that since Sketchup is so fast, people don't think of it as a "disciplined" modeling process, so they end up doing quick-and-dirty modeling. sdds
Quick and dirty may have its place, like concept art. But I guess its very easy to go back and clean the mesh in sketchup for a good model output. Architects must often give you sketchup files that are a nightmare though. AJLynn
At my previous firm, yes. At my current firm, I pretty much do all my own modeling.
