mahorela
hi guys testing the vray sun and sky but please feel free to crit anything about this image. I'm pretty happy with the workflow and the potential of the sun and sky combo, nice and easy to use.

Zeilveen
Yeh thats sweet !! I've just played around with vray sun and sky + reinhart and this surely rocks.
batteryoperatedlettuce
I've been using Vray for a few days now and I've had less success with my attempts at interior renderings. Would you mind sharing a few of your render settings?
Ricardo Eloy
Nice one, Bob! I've been using this combo and am aldo happy with it. Sometimes I find it a bit hard to set the Physical Camera, especially regarding the contrast. What are your impressions?
mahorela
yeah, I used low values for the sun and high fstop values to counter the light a little. I really like having all the options that the camera gives to control exposure etc....can never have too many options for adding or taking away light. Some configurations tend to blur bitmapped materials and environment maps though. Wish I knew more about SLR photography. Please chime in anyone that can learn us laymen. battery-are you wanting to use this system indoors?.......I will have a go at it soon, see how it goes. thanks for the comments.....might do some more testing and keep this thread open....maybe interior next time. kippu
are you tinkering with sun values..... i thought its best to leave them at 1 and then play with shutter speeds .... interesting
guitarboy
Hey love your image, lighting is awesome. i dont suppose u feel like sharing ur sun, sky camera settings so that us who r still learning how to use them could have a play with them, im still having trouble with it atm. batteryoperatedlettuce
I'd be more than willing to use this system indoors and see what it looks like. At the moment for interiors I'm using a vray light set to sphere at a distance of about 41 metres with a multiply of between 1800 and 2500 with a radius of 1 metre. I stick a blue light by each window and then bung ies lights in for the internal lights. I'm definitely going to try the physical camera/sun combo. I like your rendering a lot. It would be nice to see a tutorial some time or a link to an existing one.
Zeilveen
Kippu, I'm keeping sun at a constance, but not at 1, more the likes of 0,01 or in that area and than play wih the cam settings. It's not easy and rendering times are much higher, but I like the effect. Never tried interior come to think of it... Bob, are you compensating with fill in lights in the interior space and overhang or is that just bounching light?
stormchaser
bob i am under the impression (after going through some threads on chaos) that to achieve more realistic results you have to keep the materials a bit darker than their actual value (.255 multiplier on rgb value or vray color map with .255 multiplier) ofcourse it can be any other low number depending on what looks good. but i havent had much success with my test scenes. but your scene looks very good, did you play any trick with your materials too or just with the cam? mahorela
Zielveen-just bouncing light, only one light in this scene (sun) Stormchaser-No messing with materials here.....the white walls are 255. give me a little more time and I will explain my settings in full.....or should I write a tutorial? Zeilveen
Good idea about the tutorial bob, im all for it. I dont find it very easy to ballance the sunlight with the cam settings, I've got numerous falls renders before finally getting good results. I hope you can share some simple steps how you did it. Thanks Ronald
mahorela
Ok some more test images and the tutorial is on the way, hopefully I will be able to post it tomorrow. I have just adjusted the sun on the z axis to create these variations in light and for the interior the settings are exactly the same as the exterior shots except that I had to supplement the sunlight with one vray plane. I'm pretty happy with the results on the interior though.......pretty good considering the light took me about 2 minutes to set up. Oh and I realise for the dusk shot the sky isn't too good but after all it's just a test.
Trevor Tizard
These look really good. When you say vray plane do you mean vray plane light, and was it just a single large plane just inside the window frame? Thanks, and looking forward to that tutorial. mahorela
yeah a vray plane light.....just 1 but I put it on the other side of the room directly opposite the window but I am sure it would work either way....I was just a little aware of washing out the light too much near the window as the direct light is quite bright. I also tinted the vray plane light a subtle orange to add a little more warmth....the vray skys can be a little cold in some situations I think. stormchaser
bob by increasing turbidity can we acheive a warmer look (sunset or sunrise)? i am going to start experimenting with vraysun too (not too busy with my current project anymore.) looking forward for your tutorial in the meantime we will keep on bugging you for more help. oh btw your renderings look very nice. Justin Hunt
Whats going on with the reflections in the water of the dusk shot? Is it the backround image coming through? My fav is the afternoon shot JHV
mahorela
yeah just the background through.....ordinarily I would adjust the material a little for the different time of day but I haven't here.

Nic H
lighting lookign great bob, im about to switch over to 1.5 on my next project coming up, Iv been putting off but I think its time to embrace sun/sky combo!
mahorela
After refining my methods I have realised that they are far too simple to bother with a tutorial. 1.Linear Gamma-I have adjusted my gamma for the exterior scenes, follow this link for a tutorial of how to do this http://www.highend3d.com/3dsmax/tutorials/rendering/vray/147.html 2.Add a vray sun at default values (multiplier 1.0) and sky 3.add a vray camera at default values except the fstop which in this image is set at 16 Other than that reinhard colour mapping with a burn value of .5 and if your getting some blurring jack up your AA settings, they tend to need to be higher for the physical camera. thats it hope this helps, there's nothing more to it than that
