Jeffrey
I use the terrain in 3d to create this landscape but I'm not too happy about the result. Still a lot of small adjustment I need to do but it doesn't give me too much control. Is there any better to create a terrian with lots of control. Cheers. AJLynn
You could look at the sections on sites here: http://www.cgarchitect.com/upclose/VI/default.asp But if I were doing it I'd decide the geometry's good enough, work on the material maps for the terrain and make a more realistic base on the part on the right. I have the contour line from autocad but it's not totally accurate. What I mean is I still need to make a lot of changes on the terrain. What is the easier way to give me the maximum flexibility? Ky Lane
Ive done this before and found just setting up a plane with lots of divs, converting to a poly then moving the individual points with a soft selection was best.
mahorela
I may be missing something but what happened to creating a plane with lots of polygons and then painting yourself a terrain map in photoshop and using it in conjunction with a displacement modifier? Ky Lane
what if I'm building something like this? isn't that gonna take ages to build? No not really....just set up your contours as guides, and just pull up the points to meet the contours...gives you the ability to move individual points around to suit the scene more, quickslice the plane to get more accurate shapes or nurb it to smooth it out. One way I did it, was scan the countour map, place it on a plane under the landscape plane, and either going by the divs, or using a quickslice, Id just grab the points which intersect a contour, and just type in the Z value and pop...there you go! If you got the contours there as a max file, shoot em over and Ill see what I can do up for you.

I'll give it a try. Thanks.. Just one question. because I also need to add displacement for grass too, can I apply displacement twice?

Gene
What do you guys think of setting up some splines which represent the individual loft lines of the surface/terrain and then turn it into a NURBS surface? I found the surfaces are really smooth although perhaps not as accurate as a triangulated mesh. I am still pretty new here so I don't know if there is a downside? AJLynn
I don't see any reason not to if you're getting a good result.
stormchaser
your grass in the first view looks great. any chance of sharing your secret? btw i tried making terrain before and its never easy. my friend uses maya and he finds it relatively easy to make terrain by drawing curves on nurb surface
