SandmanNinja
Greetings all, This is my first post on this board - it looks warm, friendly and professional. I'm excited about getting involved! I'm new to Architectural Modeling and Rendering, but have been using 3DS Max 8 SP3 for about 6 months. I've done some 'mechs, spaceships, and battle fortresses, but whenever I see a photorealistic render of an interior of an office or a nice building exterior, a tear comes to my eye. I've got Mental Ray (as it comes with Max 8) and can buy VRay if that's the way to go for photorealistic renders, but I'm curious about video tutorials. I've been spoiled by video tutorials (usually produced with Camtasia's excellent software) and while I've explored the well-prepared tutorials online here, I long for seeing someone move a mouse and hearing them describe the process to me. Can someone make some suggestions for some descent video tutorials (free or commercial or subscription/membership) that I can check out? Sadly, I never really unwrapped and textured my SciFi models, so the only thing I bring to the sub-genre of 3D is familiarity with 3DS. Thanking you... -SandmanNinja (Joel)

MarkC-UK
For all things Mental Ray, I would most definitely recommend www.mentalboutmax.com
John Dollus
You should really explore the Max 9 and MR upgrade that's available. Many people find it much, much easier to use than the Max 8 solution.
SandmanNinja
Thanks again everyone. Mentalboutmax.com has some nice, affordable video tutorials and plans for future releases as well. Thanks again one and all...

SandmanNinja
yup - I'm a proud owner of Max Fundamentals and recommend them to anyone. I hope Buzz and Company put out Max Advanced. I know the interface and can draw 'mechs pretty well, I was after something Architecturally specific. The Mental Bout Max is pretty good - I ordered some of their tutorials and will go over them this weekend.

Wires, etc. I'm working on a much more professional site - this was just me using some webspace that I had sitting around to show some of my WIPs. Thanks guys - I'm glad to be here. Guest nazcaLine
hey, i like your syle. nice and concise models. did you render with vray or mental ray? do you plan to texture them, or you want to specialize in modeling? Eduardo
SandmanNinja
hey, i like your syle. nice and concise models. did you render with vray or mental ray? do you plan to texture them, or you want to specialize in modeling? Eduardo Thanks Eduardo! Those are just scanline renders with a skylight, clay texture, and light tracer. (I love clay renders - hehe). I've got the 'mech mostly unwrapped, but am re-modeling it - making it more conducive to animation and adding more detail. I'll hopefully unwrap and texture that one. I've never successfully unwrapped a medium to complex model. I've tried, but I find I spend 2-3 times as long unwrapping as I do modeling. So, unless it's a model I'm in love with, I won't spend the time unwrapping and texturing it. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult to get experience. I enjoy modeling, but want to know a bit of everything. I figure if I know unwrapping and texturing and animation, when I make a model, I can keep these things in mind. "If I do it THIS way, it'll make unwrapping it easier". If I get half-way descent with architectural interiors, I know I'll be doing some NICE spaceship interiors.... hehe BUT - I work with a lot of home builders and architects, so if I can get a grip on how to do interiors, then I might be able to turn my hobby into a living. Thanks all - I'm sure I'll be back when I have some more questions and start working through interior tutorials.

ericbarlow21
Welcome! Are those models from the tutorials of Cris Robson at 3DPalace.com? Also, I would recommend the Gnomon DVD's by Chris Nichols. There are 2 dvds in the series - one covers exterior lighting in VRay and Max and the other covers interior lighting in VRay and Max Hope this helps! Eric Thanks Koper! and Hi Eric, Yeah, Cris makes some incredible tutorials. I've got all of his commercial and sponsor member tutorials and am a proud sponsor member on his site. I got all of the tutorials from www.MentalBoutMax.com and Brian over there seems very nice. I look forward to his continuation of the tutorials. I checked out Gnomon's tutorials on Exterior and Interior lighting. Does anyone own either of these (I assume Eric does). I've heard mixed things about some of Gnomon's Character tutorials (like, working through a session, then "Here's a model I completed earlier", skipping the steps to get to that point), so I've shied away from their products. I like Brian's tutorials because they use Mental Ray and it comes with Max. But if V-Ray is the way to go for really good interior and exterior renders, then I'll have to consider that option. Cheers and thanks all... -Joel

The Interior and Exterior DVD's from Chris Nichols are excellent, really worth the money. I could also recommend the Environment Creation and Lighting DVD's from Tim Jones (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/tjo01.html). I agree about the Character Modelling DVD, this one really sucks if you are a beginner in that field.

You're the 2nd person to tell me about Gnomon's lighting tutorials. I went there, placed the order for both interior and exterior tutorials, but the shipping to Australia was US$34! That's about Fifty Aussie bucks. Guess I'm spoiled by 3d-palace's free (yes, FREE!! - incredible) international shipping to anywhere in the world. I've e-mailed Gnomon, asking if there is a download option to save the money and time. I realise the videos are a great buy, but shipping adds about 20% to the total of both discs. One more day of work and I dig into interior modeling!
Guest nazcaLine
i found this link in cgtalk, there a re very useful video tutorials, (and completely free) they cover a very wide range of fields in max, i personally downloded the uvw unwrap for organic models and they're nice. i downloded another ones also but didn't have time to see them yet. may be useful to you. http://forums.ego-farms.com/ Eduardo
olli96
You could try ebay or ask gnomon if there is a reseller in Australia for their dvd's. There is one here in germany so i think there should be also shop somewhere in australia where you can buy those dvd's... Olli
