AJLynn
That's pretty damn good. Is that an IES light in the back or did it calculate that?

Ernest Burden III
Very nice, as usual from you. I like the second one best. The ability of those slowpoke engines to do secondary lighting is so good to see. I would like to see some translucency in the bamboo leaves, but that's a minor issue. I like the lighting from the display boxes.

u.biq
amazing work how much time each image took Well, with Fry render, you don't really count in images' number, but in points of view number. I mean, when producing it, I already know I would output daytime and nigthtime views *at the same time*, 'cause light sources are on layers, like in Pshop. I've let each point of view run over a week end (PIV 3.4Ghz : really not a monster!). So, rendertimes are high (but personally i find them better than in Maxwell) and in that case you have easily 4 or 5 totally different pictures (different lightings) at the end. Devin Johnston
They look great; I'm going to be keeping my eye on Fry. How many hours did one of these images take to render, and did you use any noise filters on them?
u.biq
Hi Devin, if i remember correctly, it was render over a week end, but it was quite big : originals 2500x1876, 6LB (=6multilight in MWL) and rendered on a poor old bi xeon 3.2GhZ! So i think one could expext an overnight render with a beast, without talking of some lucky guys having renderfarms ! Denoiser on the night view but nothing heavy Cheers
Ernest Burden III
Denoiser on the night view I'm laughing now because I read that and thought "what's 'denoiser" mean? I cast back in my mind to a few years in school trying to learn French. Denoiser, must be a verb.... OH! De-noise, right. Denoiser. Of course. cloaked_spectre
my guess is that this renderer will be too slow to catch on.....with the suberb quality and speed of mental ray 3.5, why would someone "pay" for this seemingly step backwards in speed? even though the quality of those images are fantastic.....is it super easy to use for the arch laymen? admittedly, i was dissapointed with vray free's speed.....since it was soooo hyped up..... just my thoughts.... AJLynn
The competition for this isn't really mental ray, it's Maxwell - same idea but as far as I can tell, slower. Maxwell does have the advantage of making it much easier to learn how to get really great lighting, so assuming Fry ends up being similarly easy but with less downside, people are going to buy it - enough people to keep a small company in business and make some decent money for the owners. And each year as CPUs get faster it will make more and more sense to use technology like this. BTW, the Vray that gets the hype is Vray Advanced - it's got a lot more features and is a few years newer than Vray Free. I don't think Vray Free can really compare to mental ray 3.5, but Vray Advanced has advantages is several areas. It's a tradeoff and depends what exactly you want it for. Devin Johnston
What are Fry’s policies’ on licenses, how many do you get with one copy and do they count cores instead of processors? Only reason I’m asking is because Maxwell is about to have a major change in its licensing policy which is going to make it much more attractive. AJLynn
Has that been communicated by anybody official? I remember the line about how they would update the definition of "CPU" as the market changed but that was so long ago I'd been skeptical anything would come of it.
