archkre
What is the best way to navigate 3DSMax 9 while one is modeling? I mean to orbit around a solid very smoothly " a la Maya" Using shift + wheel the model jumps to hell and does not allow little adjustments! Typing III [[[ ]]] is complicated! Am I missing anything? archkre
I tried Arc Rotate SubObject. If it is going too fast, holding down the Alt key. Using Alt with Shift+mouse wheel to zoom will slow down the zoom as well. Ctrl + Alt+ wheel didn't work transparently either!

angelo
I've been using the new entry level 3D Connexion's 3D controller called SpaceNavigator. It provides a nice control panel, and the personal edition is 50 bucks or so! Very, very intuitive navigation, and also gives you more time to *work* with the mouse rather than navigate. AJLynn
I like using the scroll wheel for almost everything - wheel for zoom, hold down and drag for pan, Alt-hold down and drag for orbit. Once things get complicated I'll also start using target cameras to look at hard-to-get-at places.
ericbarlow21
hold control + alt + hold in mouse wheel then push mouse fowards or backwards for a smooth zoom in/out alt + hold down mouse wheel = orbit around (in the lower right corner of max, there is an icon which can change which you are rotating around - i keep mine on the yellow icon) I use "z" a LOT to zoom into the object/face/etc i currently have selected and it centers the camera these hotkeys i use most to navigate... and then the W E R for move/rotate/scale hope this helps! Nic H
hmm I find navigating in max very easy and intuitive. I use scroll wheel for everything, sometimes use walk through mode when detailing internals. Using alt w isolate on most objects. What does maya do that max doesnt navigation wise?
