shadow problem

I hope I have this in the right place. I'm using VRay plug-in with max9. I've been struggling with every model I make, something just didn't seem right. So I just made a sample project, got rid of every material and used just a plain ol' white for the model. I'm getting shadows in obvious spots, but they are bad. The only setting that seems to change it is the raytrace setting. However, doesn't matter what the setting is, the shadows move from one part of the model to another.

I have been working on this for weeks hoping I could find it myself without asking because I'm such a noob at this. I did some searches on shadow problems and got a thread that seemed like the ticket, but I still have the shadow problem.

Am I in the right area of correcting this?

Oh man, I was hoping you wouldn't say overlapping geometry. OMG I've got such alot of work to do now, LOL. I build this in Revit and import it over via dwg. Thanks for the responses everyone. I'll try some test models to see if the overlapping geometry is the culprit.

If it is, you won't hear from me for a long, long time! I'll be a little busy:D

Ok, Lemme ask this to see if I might be in the ballpark. Revit is notoriously bad for contoured surfaces. It creates a pretty bad faceted surface. Much of the problem shadows came from detailed items like the fascia and windows which had curved trim. I deleted the fascia on that top part of the roof and it appears the problem went away.

There is still overlapping geometry just a tad there, but it doesn't seem to be affected as much as the fascia

Might the faceted surface be the problem?

If you're in max, go into the sub object levels and try deleting some faces where the problems are occuring. If you delete something and there's still another one underneath - then you've got an overlapping face.

These problems sometimes happen to me when it's 4am and I've been instancing/copying things a lot. You hit shft, make a clone of some face forget to move it and pop - you've got overlapping geometry. Just delete bits and see what's underneath.

I've had this same problem from OVERLAPPING GEOMETRY!

Someone should write a script that somehow looks for two objects that are exactly the same and in the exact same x,y,z plane in space and then delete one of them. Or at least highlight (select) them so you can see where they are at.

I've done the same thing at 4am after working my a$$ to finish a project for an impossible deadline. Then I have to try and clean up in post-production using the Hue/Sat and Curves tools which can be a pain if the object has anything more than a simple box shape or covers a big area.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I still have something weird going on. It seems everyone is in agreement here about the overlapping geometry.

What I did is made it as simple as I could. I made an extrusion in Revit. It's one object. I imported it into Max. I made it an editable mesh. I clicked on faces and this is where I had something I thought was unusual. I tried to delete the end cap of the extrusion. When I did, there's like 50 pieces instead of just one.

I don't know if it's anything or not. I just hope I haven't wasted money, time, effort. I use Revit, there's nothing I can do about that. I use it for prints, CD's. The modeling from Revit is the bonus and I'm trying my best to make it work. I've had success, but this is what I get everytime. I hope there's something I can do to correct this on the import.

It's making me sick to my stomach thinking this will never get to the point I want it to. I know nothing is ever easy! LOL

I'll attach the simple file if anyone wants to take pity on me.

Well, I just thought I would update. it's not COMPLETELY gone, but I have found something that has tweaked it to the acceptable point for me. I was just racking my brains. Everyone here said overlapping geometry. I checked and checked and did testing and found nothing in my model. I made a simple sweep posted above and had similar problems.

However, my attention to details overlooked importing geometry specifications. I adjusted them and got this. Not perfect but it is much much better and able to work with

Well, I listened to a colleague of mine..... reluctantly.

I was told to try finalRender. Same model. I got to say I'm leaning to finalRender.

I haven't done hardly anything to the settings. One thing I noticed is the slooooow renderrrrrrrrr. LOL

OK, how'd you do that? You have a screen shot of the setting? Please? LOL

The setting I was talking about is under global switches. In order to get the effect I had its just a dirt map.

However I have not been able to recreate your problem. When I open your file it renders fine without any adjustments. But usually if you have a problem with the overlapping faces adjust the 2ndary ray bias as the first step.

This may sound dumb, but could there possibly be some setting physically on my computer that has caused this? Maybe reset my default max template? reinstall vray? I don't know, seriously, it just started popping up one day for no apparent reason. I had this weird spot under my model one day and ever since then, just problem after problem.

So far with finalrender, it has helped. I haven't had any problems. I did exactly what you did, with the .001 setting on secondary bias. I figured that was what you did, but I still got the same results. So I figured I missed something somewhere. I used the file I posted so I would (theoretically) match results with everyone else.
