lekola
Hi every one, I'm a new user of this forum and I'd like to know if anyone could help me : I'm a beginner in Sketchup and I'd like to import in Maya the model I'm creating with this software (SU). I'm using an "obj" format to transfer my models, and apart from the scale issue (everything that comes from SU is apparently far bigger in Maya), I've got a big problem : once resized, I can see my model in the the front, side and top views but not in perspective. Is anyone working with both these softwares that could help me ? If you think it is necessary to check my Maya file, I've put it at this adress (it is a 2Mo file) : http://www.nicolasweis.com/Church.mb Thanks a lot ! PS : I'm using SU 6.0 and Maya 6.
AJLynn
If you're the Nicolas Weis who knows my number, call me and I'll help you sort it out If you're not, check how off the scale is, exactly, and whether it might be a unit conversion (e.g., it's off by 100x or 2.54x or 12x or something obvious like that) and change the export units in SU or the import units in Maya or scale it as a group in Maya. Also, usually when I can't see things in Maya it's because my window location or scale are way off. Try the button that recenters and zooms to the object. I forget what button it is but I know there is one. If you still can't make it work, try it with a 3DS file or download the latest FBX plugin for Maya 6 from Autodesk and try that. I've never tried Sketchup to Maya but I've found Sketchup compatibility in general is usually best with 3DS files.
lekola
Wow wow wow... I'dlike to be the Nicolas Weis you know, I would call you right now and ask you some more precisons, I'm kind of lost. Unfortunately, being the only Nicolas Weis that I personnaly know, I don't see who you are talking about. Do we know each other ? I'm the Nicolas Weis of the http://www.nicolasweis.com website, who are you by the way ? Actually, I don't know how to "check the scale" but it is not the main problem since I can zoom out in my file and finally have the 3 other views pretty easily. ABout the "try the button that does this or that but I don't remember where it is" in Maya, you have to be kidding me : to me Maya looks like a plane cockpit ;-)) I have already try to push various buttons but each time, I feel that I'm about to hit the ejection button.... if you remember which one it is, let me know, I'll try to find it by myself. I'm going to try to export via the 3ds format and let you know if it worked. ANd I'm going to try to figure what is the FBX plugin. Thansk a lot for your answer ! AJLynn
The Nicolas Weis I know wouldn't be able to write a web site in French Anyway, I don't really know as much as I should about Maya but one easy way to check the scale is to make a line in Maya from one point to another that you can dimension in Sketchup, see what it is in both programs, and you've got the scale factor between the programs. I think some more Maya training is in your future. Sorry I can't help more but there is a Maya board here where you can ask some questions. You can find FBX plugins by going here: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=6839916 and clicking download plugins, and it looks like the newest version of FBX that supports Maya 6.0 is FBX 6.0.2. lekola
Well... I'm afraid the Nicolas Weis you know is not the good one since he can't speak french (everybody know that the good Nicolas Weis is french) Thanks a lot for the URL about the plugin I was trying to find on the autodesk website, you saved my afternoon. Unfortunately, I too see some Maya training in the future. I'd really like to stay with sketchup, for my needs it is just perfect. But dura lex sed lex, i'll have to deal with Maya soon. I'll post someting on the Maya board if you think they'll be able to help me tofigure how to make my model appear in the pers window. Thanks a lot and say hi to your pseudo Nicolas Weis. AJLynn
I think our Nicolas Weis would say that a Nicolas Weis should be Austrian
lekola
To be fair, I have to say that the Nicoals Weis I know wouldn't be able to write anything in Austrian... About the fbx plugin, i've installed it and loaded it in the plugin manager but I still can't read any 3DS file. I know I've missed something but I don't know what... AJLynn
What you missed is that an FBX plugin is for reading FBX files.
lekola
Mmm..Actually, I think I mixed it with the 3DS you were talking about. Before I switch to the Maya Board and stop bugging you about all that, wan you tell me how to import 3dS files in MAYA 6 ?
AJLynn
I don't have Maya 6, but I'd suggest that you read the manual and make some attempt to learn Maya basics.
lekola
Well, thanks for the advice, it is a brillant idea, I'm wondering why I didn't have it before. Read the manual... I came here not to have info about Maya but to know how to properly transfer a file from SU to this software. Actually, before practicing Maya, I'd like to be able to import what I did from SU, as I'm sure you may have understood it. No hard feelings but next time someone comes with a question and you don't have the answer, try "I don't know", I guess he'll figure the "read the manual on your own" part of the message.
