TheAllusionisst
I wanted to ask if anybody is successfully getting Revit models into Max where there are not a thousand entities/layers, I get a separate entity for every cabinet door, light trim...................................... In Autocad the converted model has a reasonable number of layers but when I bring it into Max everything seems separated out, I have played with the options in the file link manager, and export in Revit, maybe I am blind or dense, but all these items make the model rather useless in Max, so I must be doing something wrong. I found this tutorial http://www.vizdepot.com/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&id=89 and there is nothing there that I am not doing wrong based on it, but I can't believe everybody is dealing with this and happy about it! LOL Thanks in advance.

LOL Thanks in advance. I have'nt yet read the tutorial, but from what you explained, I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm not sure but I think that when you export from Revit to Dwg there is a way of controlling this. But like I said I'm not really sure. I just hope that someone can help us out on this! TheAllusionisst
It is a real pain, I just figured since both are Autodesk programs, there would be some way to import useful models, or some script out there that I am not aware of.
ChooChoo
I use Revit too and no, there isn't a way to get rid of all the damn entities LOL. Actually, if you do one or two, you get used to how Revit exports it and it's not too bad. You will end up highlighting dozens of items to change mapping. It's a little bit of a PITA but it's workable. I hear that Revit 10, coming out any day now, might have some improvements towards exporting. Hopefully they mean this exact topic! TheAllusionisst
Thanks! I kind of got burnt out highlighting so much and it didn't seem to let me make a group out of them so I could do it once and use groups from there on out. I had been patiently waiting for the Max 9 Productivity Pack thinking it helps on this subject, but I haven't noticed any improvement from the little I tried it. Thanks again
Jorbu
I'll echo everyone's comments in how terrible the Revit to Max exporting is. What we do is export our Revit model by materials. Once in max, we select geometry by material and export it out of max as an STL file. This helps to strip all the extra stuff that gets imported from the revit model and leaves pure geometry and it all becomes one object when re-imported. It's kind of a laborious process, but in the end we end up with few objects and each object is the same material so it's easy to manage. I know for Revit 10 they fixed the material naming problem, but I'm not sure if anything else is improved. Honestly, I can't see them trying to improve that workflow too much since the rumor is that Revit will get a different render engine. You can guess which one it'll be. I should mention that our revit model is an exterior tower so I don't know if this would work for interior projects, but I guess it's worth a try. Try using the Layer Manager instead of Select by Name for selecting your objects. If you pick a layer in the layer manager then right click and hit select, you can then do a assign material by selection in the material editor.
