Autogrid in Maya

I have been asking this question for a long time in different forums (cgtalk, area, etc.) but nobody have given me a good explanation of it.

 

Is it possible to use something similar to 3dmax autogrid modeling feature in maya or there is any good mel way to do it?

 

Why i am asking this. Because in maya you are only faced with creation models from the grid or making them directly there or clicking on the buttons in the tabs.

 

But if i have a very big scene and i need to do something in just one part of the scene i have to move the mesh from its origin to the place it have to be. And that is too slow for modeling, How do i bypass that so i can use the same or similar feature as autogrid in max.:confused:
