Which way is up? - WIP (First Post)

I saw an Escher-esque poster online the other day and thought it might be an interesting challenge to recreate it in 3D. So, here is my version.

filepush.asp?file=perspective01.jpg

I'm having an issue with Radiosity and Exlusion. It seems that even if a piece of geometry is excluded from the influence of a light (or sunlight in this instance), it is still affected by bouncing light. Which is why the bottom portion of the image is brighter than it should be. There are two pieces to the mesh, and each piece has it's own exclusive sunlight. Any ideas on how I can make sure the mesh isn't affected by the bouncing light from a light that shouldn't be affecting it?

Things to come:

- Textures

- Tweaked geometry

- Tweaked lighting

- Lens effect (to distort perspective on the top and bottom)

Regards,

Jeremy

Photons only consider the primary and secondary rays of your geometry and not their relation to the light source. Secondary rays effect the adjacent objects and the primary rays effect the object itself. Turning the secondary rays off will help a bit, but the main geometry that you have excluded from the light will still be effected by the photons. It sucks I know... :???:

Things that may help...

- try adding additional selective negative lights to darken specific areas

- texture map shadows onto the geometry itself

- render to versions, one with and one with out bounce light, then composite

Nice model, btw ;)

Hi Jeremy,

I love the mood - the soft light. If this is how close you will get with rendering or animation - turn up the segments in the spline (I'm guesing you extruding splines for the window frame and shutters). I can see the mesh clearly - needs more resolution at mesh level. ;)

Oh yes, I do plan to mesh smooth the entire result once I'm finished with the modeling ...

I going to go for a full on elvish theme.

The Soft light is actually a post effect I did in Photoshop. I asked around, but haven't been able to figure out how to do the same effect in MAX. For anyone that wants to know how I did the effect, here are the steps:

1) open your image in Photoshop

2) duplicate your image on a new layer

3) Gaussian Blur the heck out of the new layer (I used a 5 pixel blur)

4) change the layer type to Linear Dodge and play with the opacity

Done.

I'm going to continue with the window shot as a finish product because I like it so much. Any suggestions for composition would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jeremy
