Neil Woodhouse
Greetings All, I'm having a problem trying to get a good chrome effect using VRaYmtl. Anybody out there with any handy hints, tips, or liknks to a tutorial. I've checked Serge Vasiliew#s tutorial on interior lighting but i don't get the same result using his method. This is for product design of light fittings. Regards Neil Woodhouse
Keylitho
this is a vray matlib that I found on some free site somewhere, cant remember where but there are some pretty good chrome's there and if there is nothing you like it's a good starting point... But remember Chrome is only as good as what you are reflecting. ~Erik
Neil Woodhouse
Thanks Erik. Your last line poses another question. I'm using a dome for these products what sort of map for the dome would bring out the best in reflection? Neil
Keylitho
Well what are you drawing for starters. I would scratch the dome and go with an HDRI image for your enviorment.
Neil Woodhouse
I'm doing product viz on kitchen lights ( down lights that sort of thing ) for a catalogue. Never thought about HDRI's what would you reccomend for the environment
Keylitho
so I assume that your light will just be rendered against a plane background? if so try just makeing some white bars to reflect or something very light and white so it will look very chromy. But I would just take a look at alot of other product that are similar and see what is reflected in thoes.
sterealkey
Usually if I struggle to create a certain material/finish then I would download it from vray-materials.de They have an awesome library, best materials on the web IMHO. Try not to use it, instead just analyse it to see how it was made, and then make your own, otherwise you'll get lazy and not learn anything in the process Good luck! Good point, and also, some of those mats are fine in the widget scene, but in a full sized arch scene they can create lengthy render times and bad tiling. Great resource, though!
