chalk
Hi, i've been meaning to post something like this for ages and as i'm just quoting for a job now its the perfect time. I want to know roughly in English £ (or $ and i'll convert) how much you think i should charge for a job like this, or how much YOU would charge or your firm. It's a site with about 30 houses on, and 8 different types of design, but only slightly different. Houses are pretty basic 2 storey things, nothing to complicated. Client wants 1 external flyover 2 fully furnished internal animations still shots of site from above and a handful of lower shots, one for each block of buildings. I'll be putting all this onto a nicely sequenced DVD. I've got no idea what other people charge in the archviz arena so im not sure if my price is to cheap or not! Would you charge roughly £1000 - £2000, £3000 - £4000, £5000 - £6000? £10000 - £15000? £20k? Just give me a rough idea, your first gut instinct
Brian Smith
well if you do good work, in the states or the uk i would say don't even consider anything less than 20k. of course it all depends on how much you need the work.
Devin Johnston
So your doing 3 full animations, how long will they be?
chalk
i would guess about a minute, maybe minute and a half each, external might be a bit longer
Devin Johnston
If there about a minute I'd charge $20,000 for the 3 animations and then charge $1000 for each additional print rez image they want.
3DEXTRUDE
What's the deadline? Make sure you have enough time to do this...I believe you should take 1 month at least for a project like this.. Any professionals have any idea how long it should take to get a project like this done?
Devin Johnston
If it's just him by his self and it's a full time job (not a side job) then a month should be enough but I'd probably tell them 6 week just to be safe.

I agree...6 weeks would be good for a 1 person job, but at times architectural firms can be anal about time, especially if they don't have a lot of experience on getting 3D visuals. I had an architect who said " I WAS INSANE" for telling him i need 1 month to do a 1.5 minute animation of 3 homes with internal and external renders fully furnished..LOL.. They needed that within 1 week. lmao... well, i told them for that they can go to a 3D rendering firm and try their service but i doubt they would get an animation and renderings in under 1 week... chalk
Yeah i said 2 months maximum but i could do it in a month if i had to. Wouldn't that make £20,000k a bit of a rip off though as far as hourly rates go then!?!? Ive got the job not anyway and think it's probably a bit cheap, but if i can do it in a month it'll prob be the best monthly wage i've ever earn't so can't complain really And if it's affordable to the client then they'll come back.... i hope
Brian Smith
This is exactly the reason why every freelancer should build a network of support. You could sub a few of the long modeling jobs and you could finish the job in half the time easily. Modeling is the easiest phase of a project for subs to get right and if you find good ones, you should always get an accurate model back as good as you would have made it. STRAT
a max of 6 weeks sounds ample to me too. and personally i think 20K is a bit cheeky. maybe more in the range of 12-15 sounds better. 20K sounds more like a price a small company with staff and over-heads would charge. Mat@MDI-Digital
without seeing any of the house types, and asuming they want print res images of all the house type + the animations - I would think £20k about right. As for 6 weeks being enough time...we yes, it would be if it wasnt for the fact the alot of housing developers can somtimes take weeks to get back to you with coments...Iv been working on one project of 15 house types for over 4 months now (had pretty much all the house types built in 2 weeks), Im not bothered by this because Im able to manage my time around jobs like this, but for some it might not be an ideal way to work
pailhead
But it's still a lot of work, and i think it's worth at least $20k. A month is a lot of time, but i doubt that you'll really end up working normal hours. You'll probably end up with a lot of extra hours, weekends, maybe even having to sub-contract segments if anything goes wrong. And what sort of hardware do you posses, will you be able to output a job of this size? What if you have to outsource your animation rendering, that will cost you too. jackb602
Just to clarify, Maxer's suggestion was $20,000, i.e. dollars rather than pounds. That works out to about 10,000 pounds (can't seem to find the symbol).
STRAT
yup, my appologies to Maxer, didn't spot the $$$ sign
leed
How long is it going to take you to model the houses.. 2 days. 2 days texturing lighting. 1 day land-form. 1 day planting. 2 days set up external animation tidy up. Internal animations additional modelling fitting out 3 days. allowing 1 days for each of the stills. 15days or 3 working weeks. then add a week for unforeseen events. 4 weeks total.... how much do you charge a day? multiply. add any additional costs like render farm, printing dvds but sounds like somewhere between 9-12K Lee
