So how do I maintain job satisfaction whilst churning out frustratingly crap renderings?

Practice, practice, practice - get better and move on. Most of the buildings getting built are only so - so designs. If you want to work on cool buildings it takes work just to find the firm that has a style that matches your own. And if you want a high profile design firm you may not be satisfied with the employees or the employer.

I think it would be pretty hard to find the employer you like who gives you great jobs and really values what you contribute to the design process. God that sounds cynical.

How do you keep motivated in any job?

Now THAT sounds cynical!

I was really motivated at my last place of work (3dcom) and that was down to my boss and the projects. And Im really motivated doing freelance. I just want to better my work but theres no room for it in this office. Anyway, end of grumble. This thread has told me that I need a new job! Thanks guys!

I really didn't mean that cynically I think it is hard no matter what you do because no job is perfect. It is work to keep your energy up. And that is the case for every job everywhere. Regardless some days really suck. Some are ok.

how many times on a drive by u spot a nice building/project u wish u would render, but only now its pointless since its already constructed ?

the ideal scene here would be to be well connected/resourceful enough to have access to recently developed projects like say from several resources/city halls/firms so that then one could pick this or that project that is somewhat outstanding n it would be a delight to model/render..

think that would be motivational enough since we'r doing what we like doing most (as a job anyways)..

Most of the time architects have no common sense, sorry to say that. I

i wouldn't say so.;)

it's just that i came to understand that most of the time they're like any other guys who doesn't understand (and doesn't care to understand) your job. that's very sad, because if they did, they would really know what they would get from you. they're like any other professionals, some of them are hard assed and some of them are open to understand you.

unfortunately, the first ones seem to prevail :(

ok, ok, I didnt mean to start a slanging match about architects!

I was saying that their design-flow isnt conducive to creating beautiful images at my practice. So how do I maintain job satisfaction whilst churning out frustratingly crap renderings?

One thing you surely can do is to open communication channel with them.

Just discuss the project, what he intend to achieve with that image, how it's going to explain his concept, etc. That way you know what to highlight and what is minor.

After a while you can 'anticipate' the style of that particular architect. Coz, they do have a tendency of 'repeating the same template' again and again.

With all the trouble in communication between your architect boss and yourself, there can perphaps be a slight chance that both of you may get what you want and overcome the deadlock, when it comes to "nice artistic render" vs "clear representation and not in real life look" (*whew* long one).

What i do in a situation like this is tell the architect to show the client both. That way your work wont go into the drawer. It usually works. Usually the more renders a client sees the more happy he is (to point out silly mistakes).

Im studying architecture. The truth is that he (the architect) can point out something wrong in my render, and i can point out something wrong in his architectural project.

So i just give him the "dont mess with my work and i wont mess with yours" look and we get along fine :D

Of course thats partly true because #1 i cant be bothered and #2 he probably wont give a rats ass :D
