lyca
little stupid question, if we use mental ray shaders and vray shaders in max, and assign the vray as renderer, what do max do ? are both shaders, mr and vray treated as vray in rendering ?
AJLynn
No, a mental ray material, a shader that's written for mental ray only, or an Arch&Design(mi) material, will only work with mental ray (and a VrayMaterial will only work with Vray). The only exception I've seen is that the new version of finalRender can use Arch&Design(mi) materials.
Justin Hunt
Thats interesting that MI shaders can be used by Finalrender, do you know if this is intentional or not? JHV
AJLynn
Yes it is. They also have a finalRender Arch&Design with the same functions as the mental ray one, so I guess they just put in a translator.
Justin Hunt
Very clever move, if there is a translator then I suppose other mi shaders can be used as well JHV
AJLynn
I don't think it actually works with mental ray shaders, it just reads off the settings from the Arch&Design material and interprets them like it's a finalRender Arch&Design material. So you could have a scene set up for mental ray and translate it a lot faster because most material settings don't need to be changed, or if you got a library of A&D materials you could use them. But you couldn't, for example, make a tricked-out old-school mental ray material and use that.
Justin Hunt
pitty, it would open up the Finalrender market share a bit if it could. JHV
